Bella Zennan half-court shot ignites Eastlake comeback

February 8, 2011

The shot almost never goes in. But when it does, it can lift a team out a rut.

Bella Zennan may have saved the final game of the regular season for the Eastlake Wolves when she hit a buzzer-beater from half court to end the third quarter Feb. 4 at Skyline.

With five seconds left, the junior guard drove the in-bounded ball down the court, stepped on the half-court line and lobbed up the hopeful shot. No backboard. Just the back of the rim, the net and in.

Spartan basketball stays in the running, Lady Wolves win 2

January 25, 2011

Skyline remains in contention for the 4A KingCo Conference Crest Division title. The Spartans split a pair of games last week to raise their league record to 6-3. Entering this week, Skyline is just one-half game behind first-place Redmond.

On Jan. 21, Skyline rallied from a 13-point deficit to overcome host Bothell 54-51. The Spartans outscored Bothell 17-7 in the final quarter to pull out the victory. Kasen Williams led Skyline with 16 points. Bryan Cikatz and Teran Togia each had 12 points, and Jonah Eastern contributed nine points. The Spartans couldn’t hold off Inglemoor in the final period Jan. 18 and lost to the visiting Vikings 47-45. Williams topped Skyline with 14 points and Lucas Shannon had 10 points.

Eastlake girls battle to beat Skyline

January 18, 2011

As the clock ran out in the Eastlake gym, the Skyline defense tried to make something work. The Lady Spartans had pressed hard all game and fought for the team’s share of turnovers. But Eastlake sent junior guard Caleigh McCabe to the line three times in the final 1 minute, 39 seconds. She made four of six and put the score out of reach.

It was a physical battle Jan. 14, but the Lady Wolves won it with strong rebounding, while the shots just wouldn’t fall for Skyline.

Skyline girls lose to Issaquah in OT

January 12, 2011

Issaquah standout Maddie Pflaumer couldn’t have picked a better time to hit her shots. With 4 minutes, 12 seconds left in the fourth quarter against district rival Skyline, Pflaumer tied the ballgame at 38 after neither team had scored in three and a half minutes and the Eagles had trailed all game. Pflaumer had an off night until then.

But her free throws and a couple of clutch shots from teammates sent the game into overtime. The Lady Spartans, who led all game and seemed to control the tempo throughout, lost composure in the extra quarter.

Issaquah prevailed 47-44 after Pflaumer found her groove.

3-pointer ends 12-game Skyline boys home win streak

January 4, 2011

Of the many things Skyline didn’t know about the visiting Bishop Manogue team was that senior guard Brennan Hogan could shoot threes in the clutch.

“He was a dark horse,” said Skyline junior forward Lucas Shannon, who was a defensive force for the Spartans.

The Bishop Manogue Miners (10-4), from Reno, Nev. ended Skyline’s 12-game home winning streak with a 55-53 final-seconds win Dec. 30.

Basketball season fires up

December 7, 2010

Sammamish athletes move off the fields and into the gyms as winter sports start rolling. Boys and girls basketball teams will face stiff competition, and the loss of some top players from last year.

The Wolves, which made the playoffs last year, lost the opener 60-53 to Mercer Island, but started the 2010 season 1-1 after beating Cascade 88-67 Dec. 4. Returning starters like Conner Iraola, a senior guard, said Eastlake, which used a rapid-fire offensive approach in 2009, could be one of the faster teams in the league this season. Read more

Amy Ziegler led with drive, focus and humility

June 15, 2010

Of all the things Skyline senior Amy Ziegler is going to miss about being a three-sport athlete, she’s going to miss the relationships she cultivated and the jovial Friday-night game atmosphere, she said.
Ziegler lettered in nine of the 12 sports seasons she played during her four-year career at Skyline. But high school sports is now over for the 2010 graduate and, other than going to college, she’s not sure what the future holds.
