Curtis dashed the Eastlake Wolves’ hopes of making it to the next round in the state playoffs in the final minutes of the Nov. 12 first-round game in University Place.
Curtis beat Eastlake 21-14 on a 68-yard bomb from quarterback Tyler Jameson to receiver Rahmel Dockery with less than eight minutes left in the game.
Eastlake was its usual self, though, pounding away with the run game.
Down 14-0 in the second quarter, Eastlake’s Keegan Kemp tossed a 56-yard touchdown pass to receiver Colin Nelson.
The Wolves defense held strong through the second and third quarters and Eastlake tied it up early in the fourth quarter on a Kyle Lappano 3-yard rushing touchdown.
Eastlake finished the season 8-3.
Maybe it was the cold, driving rain. Maybe it was the lack of tempo. Maybe it was that Eastlake running back Kyle Lappano was the only player who showed any kind of consistency for either team.
Despite whatever it was that sucked the energy out of Everett Memorial Stadium Nov. 6, the Eastlake Wolves (8-2) coasted to a relatively easy 35-14 win over the Jackson Timberwolves in the preliminary round of the playoffs.

Eastlake even gave Skyline some early motivation by scoring first on a Kyle Lappano 60-yard touchdown run on the second play of the game.

Eastlake head coach Gene Dales’ voice was so hoarse, he could barely express the joy of pulling off a last-second win over sixth-ranked Issaquah.
But when the raspy words did come out — as Eastlake players and coaches leapt in the air, pumped their fists and hugged — his feelings were simple.
“This is good,” he said.

When the game began Sept. 16, Eastlake head coach Gene Dales knew the Wolves would have to control the sizeable Roosevelt defensive line, he said.
But after the first quarter, and as the rain fell on Memorial Stadium in Seattle, it was clear Eastlake did exactly that.
“Man, we got after it up front,” Dales said after the game.

The Wolves led off in the first quarter with a 43-yard rushing touchdown from Lappano. John Kilburg knocked in a 14-yard field goal to put Eastlake up 10- after one.

The fact that Skyline sophomore quarterback Max Browne has some big shoes to fill might be a gross understatement. But he and his teammates aren’t letting the fact that three-time state champ Jake Heaps isn’t here to lead the team to another title get to them.
And even though Skyline lost a handful of its core varsity squad to graduation, Browne and the Spartans carried over their energy from the 2009 championship season with the same goal in mind — make it to the Tacoma Dome.
