Alcott Elementary families dash for dollars

Alcott Elementary is trying something new this year to raise money for its classrooms and after-school activities – a 5K fun run.

“We’ve done auctions in the past,” said Danette Dye, co-president of Alcott’s PTA and mother of two Sammamish youngsters who attend the elementary school. “We have a very diverse community in our school and we wanted to hold an even that would encourage all families to participate.” Read more

Eastside Catholic students visit Legislature

After months of learning about state history and government, the Eastside Catholic eighth grade visited Olympia for up-close lesson.

The group of about 90 students, accompanied by teachers and parents, made the nearly 75-mile journey to Olympia April 2 where they spent four hours exploring the Washington State Capitol Campus. Read more

Issaquah PTSA honors outstanding volunteers

The primary decorations were orange construction cones and yellow caution tape. Winners were described in terms keeping with that theme, such as construction tools or architects. One winner from the Issaquah School District PTSA Council was described as “the construction glue” that holds the council together. Read more

Plateau DECA students earn spot at internationals

DECA students from Eastlake and Skyline high schools blew the competition out of the water at the State Career Development Conference March 9.

Ranging from entrepreneurship to advertising, more than 3,400 students bid against each other in 42 events for a chance move on to the International Career Development. Read more

Hot fudge principal at Blackwell

It’s not every day that an elementary school principal lets dozens of his students turn him into a human whipped cream sundae. But that’s just what happened on March 26 when Mike Anderson, principal of Elizabeth Blackwell Elementary School, volunteered to let the two classes that raised the most money for the American Cancer Association cover him in whipped cream, chocolate, sprinkles and cherries.

Permit delays mean Eastlake will temporarily house new STEM school students

New: March 30, 9:22 a.m.

The Lake Washington School District announced on March 29 that it’s new Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) school will open in the fall of 2012 but not in its intended location. Eastlake High School will be its temporary quarters because the permanent building, which is set to be located off state Route 202, near Alcott elementary, will not be ready in time. Read more

Beaver Lake Middle School players take audience on a trip over the rainbow in The Wizard of Oz

New: March 29, 1:55 p.m.

They’re off to see the wizard at Beaver Lake Middle School where nearly 80 students have worked for three months to bring the classic story “The Wizard of Oz” to the stage.

Directed and choreographed by teacher Carol Woodman, the play opens March 29 and runs through March 31 in the middle school’s commons.

Cascade Ridge students raise thousands for Africa

The fifth graders at Cascade Ridge Elementary School had their work cut out for them March 16 when they had 90 minutes to package more than 24,000 individual meals to send to Africa.

The students had originally scheduled that time to put together 8,000 packages but when they lapped their fundraising goal of $2,000 the children ended up buying several thousand more pounds of food.

Who is: Arjun? Local whiz kid earns spot on “Jeopardy!”

Every night, 12-year-old Arjun Malhotra sits down with his family to watch “Jeopardy!” As they watched the show one evening in October “Jeopardy!” announced it was looking for young minds to compete in Kid’s Week and Arjun told his parents he wanted to try out.
