Tent City IV will be able to stay in Sammamish for a total of 90 days, thanks to action by the City Council Dec. 3.

The council unanimously approved a measure which effectively grants the group a 30-day extension.

Under city regulations, the administration only had the authority to allow the traveling homeless encampment to stay for 60 days. The camp moved in behind Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church Oct. 19 with its 60-day permit. Tent city members like to stay in one place for 90 days. This is the first time they have been in Sammamish since the tent city was founded in 2007.

The temporary change allows city officials to extend the permit by another 30 days.

The council discussed the idea of setting up a set of regulations, should Tent City IV wish to return in the future. However, city staff cautioned they will have little time to study such an issue, considering their current workload. No firm plans were made for a study.
