The Community Center is projected to go $4 million over budget. Should the city pay more or cut parts of the project?

Reduce costs without reducing functionality. Finishing materials – emphasize functionality. Reexamine the access road; it appear to be less functional and added $500,000 to the cost.

How should the city best provide future fire services?

A community fire service. Regional service is too high, includes services we don’t need and our firefighters are frequently out of the city.

If it gets the opportunity, should Sammamish annex Klahanie? Why?

Yes. Issaquah’s focus will be on integrating the Highlands and building out Central Issaquah, Sammamish is focused on creating a city of families including children, adults and seniors.

What are the top issues for review of the Comprehensive Plan?

1) Accommodating growth while preserving quality of life and protecting current neighborhoods. Encouraging cottage and energy efficient housing and local and home based businesses and foster sustainability.

What should the city’s role be to kick-start Town Center?

Facilitator: Hiring a short term employee to bring investors and businesses services and connect them to property owners. Provide parking infrastructure to enhance access.

Should the city assume either or both of the plateau water districts? Why?

Yes, I believe that it more efficient for builders businesses and home owners to deal with one agency related to their development and utility issues.

If the city had an extra $1 million to spend, what should it be used for?

Additional staff in public works and planning. Community programs with specific emphasis on cultural activities and programs aimed at middle schoolers, teen and seniors.

If budget cuts were needed, where would you suggest they be made?

Consultants

Should the city add a Business & Occupation tax as a new revenue source?

NO, no utility or B&O tax.

If elected, what would be your top priority in your first year in office?

Community outreach related to the community plan and the types of amenities and services that are desired and would be supported in the Town Center.

What decision made by the council in the past four years would you change and why?

The location of the community center and not including structured parking. Adding that facility without parking support may deter use of activities in the area.

How will you communicate with the residents?

I’m a pretty accessible person so would be available by phone, email, neighborhood or one on one meetings and email and conversations at the grocery store, symphony, opera, or while walking the dog.

How will you communicate with other council members outside meetings?

One on one meetings and at social and community events. It’s important to build relationships and trust in each other.

What is the primary difference on issues between you and your opponent?

I have the time, energy, experience to address the issues coming our way. We agree on fire but don’t know his stance on other issues.

I would like to know what Ms. Huckabay would do about Tent City 4…specifically,
how should the city develop the permit process in the future? What role will the city have in future discussions with the church? Are there any limits she would like to see? (for example, Mercer Island imposed an 18 month restriction on TC4, in between it’s visits there) Would she fight for that kind of restriction?

I’ve asked her personally about these issues and her response was that she thinks we shoud support the homeless in our city. In other words, she didn’t give any kind of answer as to how to deal with the issue in the future. I think most would agree that we should be helping those less fortunate than us. That’s a separate issue from how our city handles Tent City 4 visits.

Can you briefly explain what you mean by “community based” fire service? I thought that is what we have already.

Got something to say?
