Community center is a boondoggle

In reference to your recent article (“Council formally chooses design for Community Center,” March 27, 2013) and as a long time resident of Sammamish, I would to opine that the project, now $2.3 million over budget, is becoming a “Big Dig” west,  similar to the infamous and shameful experience of Boston, Mass.

To extend the metaphor, we are already in the hole, financially, without a shovel  of earth turned or a planning pencil put to paper.  I am wondering, if this project is a fiasco-in-the-making!

Let’s finally pay men and women the same

Happy 50th birthday — April 9 is designated as Equal Pay Day.

On June 10, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act (introduced in Congress in 1945) with three American Association of University Women members present. President Obama has said, “You have to make it happen; make us do it. For the People, By the People, Of the People.”

And I guess he is right, because AAUW began in 1894 collaborating with the Massachusetts Bureau of Statistics of Labor to analyze the pay of college-educated women. At that time, a woman office worker made $6 a day, but her male counterpart, called a professional bookkeeper, was paid $15 a day for the same job.

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 extended the statute of limitations to contest pay equality.

The Paycheck Fair Act, reintroduced in 2013, would close some of the loopholes that kept the l963 Act from full protection and equality, but, it will still not be the end of the road.

So, my grandson, ready to enter college this fall, can expect to pay off college loans sooner than someone’s granddaughter, because he would be earning a beginning salary of $42,918 to her $35,296. He could also be earning a half-million more in a lifetime; some even say a million more. Young women are aware of this; a young woman asked about it during the presidential debate.

So, we the people still have work to do!

Re: “Let’s finally pay men and women the same”

No doubt many pay equity advocates believe that “greedy, profit-obsessed” employers would hire only illegal immigrants for their cheaper labor cost if they could get away with it. Or move their business to another, cheap-labor country to save money. Or replace older workers with younger ones for the same reason. So why do these same advocates believe that virtually every employer would NOT hire only women if, as they say, employers DO get away with paying females less than males for the same work?

Here is just one of many reasons women average lower pay than men:

“In 2011, 22% of male physicians and 44% of female physicians worked less than full time, up from 7% of men and 29% of women from Cejka’s 2005 survey.” http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/2012/03/26/bil10326.htm

Mind you, these are some of the most sophisticated, educated women in the country CHOOSING to earn less than their male counterparts in the exact same profession.

A thousand laws won’t close that gap.

In fact, no law yet has closed the gender wage gap — not the 1963 Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, not Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, not the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act, not affirmative action (which has benefited mostly white women, the group most vocal about the wage gap – http://tinyurl.com/74cooen), not the 1991 amendments to Title VII, not the 1991 Glass Ceiling Commission created by the Civil Rights Act, not the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act, not diversity, not the countless state and local laws and regulations, not the thousands of company mentors for women, not the horde of overseers at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and not the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act…. Nor will a “paycheck fairness” law work.

That’s because women’s pay-equity advocates, who always insist one more law is needed, continue to overlook the effects of female AND male behavior:

“male matters”? Way to hide chauvinist nonsense behind an anonymous name.

The rest of your blog (http://malemattersusa.wordpress.com and thanks for the link!) is nothing more than the usual rah rah NCFM anti-feminist “men’s movement” stuff that does little more than deride women for having the nerve to want to be equally under the eyes of the law.
