Eastside Catholic hailed its first wrestling state championship in 27 years Feb. 16, when Sammamish’s own Matt Iwicki won the 120-pound 3A state title.

As 113-pound freshman last year, Iwicki took third in state. He returned as a sophomore to win 31 of his 33 regular season matches and to go undefeated in the post season– winning districts and regionals before taking state.

Iwicki won the 3A Region 1 Tournament by pinning both Jonathan Gallivan of Bainbridge Island and Jacob Scott of Stanwood, before going on to beat Bishop Blanchet’s Jesse Marek 3-0 in the final.

The next weekend, at Mat Classic, Iwicki rolled through the championship bracket, not allowing a single point to be scored against him in his four matches. He secured his first victory with a 16-0 technical fall against Zack Moore of Hazen and continued with an injury default by Avery Meyer of Lincoln, a third round pin over Wil Treadwell of Prairie in the semifinals, and a 5-0 decision in finals versus Mount Spokane’s Kiegen Schauer.

Iwicki was voted Metro Wrestler of the Year for the second year in a row and maintains a 3.94 GPA at Eastside Catholic. The school’s last wrestling state champion was Eric Wattam, who won the 122-pound title in 1986.
