Edwin M. Smithers, of Sammamish, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at home. He was 87.

Ed was born May 13, 1925, in Kalispell, Mont. He was raised in Kalispell and graduated from Flathead County High School in 1943. Following high school, Ed entered the United States Navy and served in World War II. After the war, he began his tenure with the United States Coast Guard.

On July 13, 1945, Ed married Joan Alicia Bondeson in Kalispell. His service in the Coast Guard had them living in many parts of the country. In 1972, they settled in Sammamish, and in 1974, he retired from the Coast Guard as a lieutenant commander. After retiring from the Coast Guard, Ed held several other jobs, one of which was working on Jetfoil production at The Boeing Co.

In his leisure time, Ed enjoyed wood working, hunting with his sons, fishing and spending the holidays with his family. Ed also loved to dance and was a wonderful swing dancer. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, The Vintage Iron Tractor Club and Chief Warrant Officers Association.

Ed is remembered by his family as a responsible and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was dedicated to serving his country. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his loving wife Joan Smithers, of Sammamish; sons Thomas, of Sequim, Mark, of Woodinville, and Eric, of Kenmore; brother William, of Kalispell; four grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends.
