Philip Cherian and Manuel Soto will be the new members of the Sammamish Planning Commission.

Cherian’s application had arrived a bit late, through no fault of his, so the council considered his application even though it came in after the deadline.

The former Amazon executive now works for Datasphere. He works in product management, focusing on software and online services.

At the council’s Jan. 22 meeting, Cherian said he recently became a U.S. citizen. He wants to serve the community and be a role model for his children.

Councilman John James and Mayor Tom Odell both said they knew Cherian personally before his decision to apply to be a planning commissioner.

The council also appointed Manuel Soto, an urban planner.

The council also voted to extend the term of Planning Commission Chairwoman Kathy Richardson through March. Richardson is leaving the commission, but will stay on as the commission finishes up its work on the environmentally critical areas ordinance.

The council appointed Pauline Cantor, Loreen Leo and Cheryl Wagner to the Parks Commission. The council also appointed Lin Garretson, Amy Lam and Anne Schafer to the Arts Commission.
