Eastlake girls fall to Issaquah 62-49 in rematch

Issaquah High School girls basketball coach Kathy Gibson knew she had to make some adjustments for the rematch with the Eastlake Wolves.
The key was just how well her team would adapt to those changes.
The Eagles apparently adapted quite well Jan. 27 when they defeated the visiting Eastlake 62-49 in a KingCo Conference 4A contest.

Local players earn all-state soccer honors

Three members of the Skyline High School girls soccer team that won the Class 4A state title last fall were selected to the Washington State Soccer Coaches Association all-state team. In addition, Skyline’s Don Braman was named Class 4A coach of the year.
Eastside Catholic’s Scott Brayton, who directed his team to the Class 3A final four, was selected as 3A co-coach of the year. Read more
Bellingham Bells sign Ryan Somers

The Bellingham Bells have resigned Ryan Somers to play during the 2012 season. Somers, a catcher, will return for his second season with the Bells. A native of Sammamish and graduate of Skyline High School, he is a redshirt sophomore at Seattle University. Somers redshirted for the Seattle University Redhawks in 2010 before becoming a regular in 2011 where he played in 40 games, starting in 27 of them. Read more

Eastlake High School’s Relay for Life kickoff event is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Sammamish EX 3 Teen Center. Relay for Life is a fundraiser to support cancer research that will happen in May.
Plan for roundabout underway

The city will be adding a roundabout at the intersection of Northeast Eighth Street and 233rd Avenue to handle increased traffic expected from adding a second entrance to Eastlake High School.
The council approved spending up to $165,000 on the design of the project, which officials from city and Lake Washington School District officials aim to have finished by the time school starts again in the fall. The project, which is expected to cost a total of $777,000 is part of the expansion of Eastlake in preparation for ninth graders being added to the school. The expansion is being funded by a $65.4 million school levy approved by voters in February 2011. Read more
Meeting with Lake Washington district superintendent candidate rescheduled

A snowed-out meet-and-greet with the preferred candidate for the Lake Washington School District superintendent position has been rescheduled for Feb. 7.
Dr. Traci Pierce will be at Sammamish City Hall before the Feb. 7 council meeting, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Pierce has worked as a teacher, principal and central administrator for 17 years in Lake Washington schools. The district’s board of directors recommended her as Kimball’s replacement at its Dec. 5 meeting in part because she will bring familiarity with district systems and vision to maintain continuity while executing the district’s numerous current initiatives, the district said.
Pierce is currently the Lake Washington district’s deputy superintendent of instructional services.

Legislature considers allowing voter registration at 16

They may not qualify to attend an R-rated movie, but soon 16-year-olds in Washington State could register to vote.
Register? Yes.
Actually vote? No. That civic privilege starts at age 18.
A bill to extend advanced voter registration to 16 year olds has been introduced in the legislature this session and the House Committee on State Government and Tribal Affairs met Jan. 12 to listen to public testimony on the proposal. Read more
Many Sammamish lawmakers support gay marriage

State Sen. Andy Hill (R-45) has yet to announce his position
State Sen. Andy Hill says he remains undecided on the issue of gay marriage though two of his Republican counterparts on the Eastside have thrown their support behind a measure that would grant homosexuals the right to marry.
Hill represents the northern edge of Sammamish, and after the redistricting process is complete in November is poised to represent the northern half of the city. Read more
