Eastlake senior Nicole Guptil was a bit nervous heading into the 2011 softball season.

She had led KingCo batters with a .521 batting average as a junior in 2010 and had stepped up her game as one of the league’s leading pitchers, too.

“It definitely made me more nervous for this year,” she said June 7, reflecting on the team’s run in May.

But Guptil turned those nerves into strikeouts and hits in 2011. Although she didn’t top the league, she still finished with a .400 batting average and had 98 strikeouts against regular-season KingCo batters. In those 16 games, she walked 32 batters and finished with a 12-2 record. She also led the team with 20 RBIs. Read more

As the boxes piled up in the back parking lot at Pine Lake Covenant Church June 8, volunteers played a big game of Tetris in the back of the 40-foot semi-truck trailer. They had to figure out how to best arrange nearly 600 boxes of supplies donated from the Sammamish community over the past month and a half. The church youth group members formed a continuous stream of boxes as they grabbed them from a room in the building and prepped them for loading.

Pine Lake Covenant Church gathered about 11,000 pounds of clothing, school supplies, household goods and other life necessities to send to families in Targu jiu, in the Gorj region of Romania. The youth group and other church volunteers spent the evening June 8 loading the 583 boxes of goods into a 40-foot shipping container. Read more
