Police to lose domestic violence specialist

Sammamish and nearby unincorporated east King County will no longer have a police detective designated specifically to domestic violence cases starting this week.
Detective Amy Jarboe, who has been policing the Sammamish Plateau since 1987, will be moved to a patrol position in the North Bend area due to restructuring in the King County Sheriff’s Office following Kirkland’s annexation of the Finn Hill and Juanita areas. Read more

Sammamish City Council to form economic development committee

The Sammamish City Council formed an economic development committee that will look at ways to advocate for business in the community and potentially jumpstart the Town Center project.
The council approved forming the committee at their May 16 meeting by a unanimous vote. The committee will look at infrastructure financing, the possibility of public-private partnerships and other ways to support commercial development in Town Center and around the city. Read more
King County adopts plan to prevent offenders from returning to jail

King County leaders accepted a plan May 9 to prevent offenders from returning to jail, and to help former offenders transition from incarceration to society.
The decision enables the county to access funds through the federal Second Chance Act, a measure meant to provide social services to prevent recidivism among former offenders.
The legislation authorizes federal grants to government agencies and nonprofit organizations to provide employment assistance, substance abuse treatment, housing and other services. Read more
Issaquah, Lake Washington School districts face millions in cuts

While both Sammamish school districts stand to lose millions of dollars over the next two years, some worst case scenarios don’t seem to be coming to fruition. Neither district plans to reduce teachers to the point that it will impact class size.
After months of wrangling, the Legislature passed a $32.2 billion spending plan May 25. With new taxes off the table, lawmakers hashed out a compromise plan to close a $5.1 billion hole in the two year budget. Read more
Sammamish burglaries up in 2010, crime rate still low

Sammamish Police say an informed and proactive public is the best weapon to combat a recent rise in residential burglaries in the city.
More than 20 residents, including many from the Kempton Downs neighborhood, had pointed questions for police at a May 24 forum on residential safety. Word of the forum spread among Kempton Downs neighbors following a burglary the morning of May 23 that led police to set up a perimeter in the neighborhood and attempt to track down a suspect with dogs. A local television news crew broadcast footage of the police response. Read more

Plateau runners, jumpers, throwers heading to state

Once again, Skyline’s Kasen Williams is headed to the state track tournament in three events. Williams won the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches) and triple jump (45-05) May 19 and took second in the long jump (22-01.25) May 20 at the 4A Bi-District Championships in Marysville.
He helped the Spartan boys place fifth overall with 55 points. Arlington won the meet with 74 points and Eastlake tied for 16th overall with 10 points. The Skyline girls placed seventh with 40.2 points and Eastlake scored 22 points to tie for 14th. Inglemoor won the girls meet with 82 points. Read more
