Donate life jackets to public boat launches

The state is seeking boating clubs, public safety agencies and other civic organizations interested in establishing a life jacket loaner site at public boat launches or marinas.
Call the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission at 360-902-8555 to learn more. The state has limited funding to provide life jackets and materials at no cost to help establish a public loaner site in time for boating season. Read more

The Evergreen Philharmonic, the Issaquah School District’s orchestra made up of students from all three high schools, will perform a “Concerto Concert” at 7:30 p.m. June 1 and a “Season Finale Concert” at 7:30 p.m. June 4. Both will be at Skyline High School.
artEAST Art Center will present the traveling exhibition of the 2011 SAMMI Awards Art Collection from June 3-27. The public is invited to the opening reception from 6-8 p.m. June 10 at the gallery, 95 Front St. N. in Issaquah. Read more
Eastlake boys golfers finish second

The Eastlake boys golf team finished second in the state at the 4A tournament at the Creek at Qualchan Golf Course in Spokane May 24 and 25. The boys had a team score of 89, behind winner Bellarmine Prep, which scored a 95.5. Read more

For the seniors, the state championship track and field meet at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School May 27 and 28 marked the final athletic event of their high school careers.
This was so for Skyline High School’s Kasen Williams. But for Williams, there were few better ways the two days could have turned out.
Williams took first place in all three events in which he participated, setting a new state record in the triple jump with a monstrous 50-foot 9.25-inch leap. His father had held the same record from 1977-1999 with a 50 3/4 jump. Read more
Two Skyline students are merit scholars

Two Skyline High School students recently received scholarship awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The organization announced May 25 that Saumya Copparam and Dipanwita Maulik each won a scholarship to attend their respective university this fall.
The award ranges from $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years. As National Merit Scholarship finalists, Copparam and Dipanwita are among approximately 8,300 high school seniors in the country to be awarded scholarships, which come from various corporations and universities, as well as the organization itself, in 2011. Approximately 2,900 students earned financial awards from universities through the National Merit Scholarship program. Read more
Arjun Kumar returns from National Geographic Bee experience

Arjun Kumar, 13, recently competed in the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. The Beaver Lake Middle School seventh-grader was ultimately eliminated during the preliminary round May 24. The top-10 finalists competed for a $25,000 scholarship and a trip to the Galapagos Islands in the finals May 25 at the National Geographic Society.
During the preliminary round of questions, Arjun missed one question: In which country is the Airedale Valley and the Aire river located? The correct answer is the United Kingdom. The mistake sent him to the tie-breaker, where he was eventually eliminated with the question: Amman and Cochin-China are the former names of which country? The answer is Vietnam. Read more
Beaver Lake and other math teams do well at state

Eighth-grader Tommy Lin doesn’t care if people call him a nerd because he likes math. He’s the ASB president at Beaver Lake Middle School but also competes with the math team every year at the state championships.
And he does well.
Lin and his 23 fellow Beaver Lake math club competitors all placed in the top 40 percent at the 2011 Washington State Math Championships May 7 at Blaine High School, said team coach and BLMS math teacher Dennis Rogers. Read more
Rachel Carson Elementary goes gaga for GaGa

Kelly Cameron’s sixth grade class went GaGa after they returned from Camp Seymour for their sixth grade trip.
But we’re not talking about Lady Gaga. The students had been playing an intense form of dodgeball in a GaGa Pit (a fence-like structure enclosing the players) and couldn’t get enough of the game. So, two students from Cameron’s class, Nick Gordon and Tom Lawler, decided to build a pit of their own for the students at Rachel Carson Elementary School.
Jennifer Gordon helped her son and several of his classmates build the pit, comprised of eight hinged slabs of wood, in her garage. She said the pit provides good exercise that everyone can take part in. Read more
Richard (Dick) Osborne

Richard (Dick) Osborne, 90, passed away May 21, 2011, at his home in Sahalee with his wife Margaret and family near at hand. Dick, the first son of Ruby Davison and Atlee Burpee Osborne, was born in DuQuoin, Ill., Feb. 5, 1921. His parents soon moved to Portland, Ore., where his father started a tugboat company. Dick attended Fernwood Grammar School and Grant High School and graduated from Oregon State University (then College), where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. With the other ROTC seniors at the university, he was drafted into the Army at Ft. Lewis spring term, 1943. They returned to school to finish the term. Read more
