New: April 30, 2:27 p.m.
The members of team “Fight Like A Girl” have raised nearly $7,000 as they prepare for the 2011 Relay For Life event at Eastlake High School. And its team captain, Kaylee Hansen, has raised more than any individual participant — $4,675, according to the American Cancer Society.
The Relay For Life happens May 14-15 at the school’s track and football field. More than 560 people on 62 teams will walk the track — at least one team member walking from noon May 14 to 8 a.m. May 15 to raise money and awareness for cancer research. They will also remember those who have died from the disease, as well as the many survivors who live in or near Sammamish. Read more

As the car full of teens approached the crash site, one youth lay lifeless on the hood of a small SUV while others stumbled onto the pavement dazed and bloody. An opened bottle of hard alcohol fell from the back seat and rolled on the ground.
The friends who happened upon the scene yelled in shock at those who had just crashed with an oncoming car, killing two and injuring two more. Police and fire units arrived within a couple of minutes.

County announces plan to unclog lake-to-river transition
King County environmental managers plan to tackle the high water level in Lake Sammamish, after aquatic weeds and sediment clogged the outlet from the lake to the Sammamish River.
The problem — although centered at county-run Marymoor Park along the lake’s northern shore — reflects a common complaint among lakeside residents in Issaquah and Sammamish about the water level. Read more

Sammamish has identified three potential sites for its community/aquatic center, all of which are in the Town Center area.

New park at Sammamish Landing beach to open this fall
April 27, 2011
New: April 27, 11:18 a.m.
This fall, Sammamish residents will finally have public access to the lake the city is named after.
The City Council got an update on Sammamish Landing Park at its April 18 meeting while approving a $45,000 contract for redesign work on the park’s two docks.
The update also stirred up some grumbling from citizens and at least two council members who worried that the city wasn’t getting enough bang for its buck in the $650,000 park project. Read more
Stormwater guidelines: boring but important
April 26, 2011
There is a rule of inverse proportions that is generally true in government: The more boring something is, the more important.
That certainly seems to be the case with proposed changes to the way the city handles stormwater regulations. The regulations govern generally how much water can leave a property after a rainstorm and how quickly. The rules are arcane and can seem confusing to the uninitiated, but whatever the council decides will matter. Read more

Focus on what matters
The controversy over the application by a Muslim mosque for a parking lot on Southeast 20th Street has unfortunate elements to it, but on the merits, there is substance to the concerns.
Traffic is probably the least of the issues, because it will be spread throughout the day. The environmental impact of a 40-stall parking lot to highly sensitive Pine Lake is the key issue. I should think the cost of handling runoff would be a deterrent to the mosque. Read more

April 26, 2011
King County Executive Dow Constantine called for keeping monthly sewer rates stable for 2012 under a proposal sent to the County Council last week.

Sammamish City Council will decide how to manage stormwater runoff
April 26, 2011
In deciding whether to keep older and less-restrictive stormwater regulations for developments less than an acre in size, some City Council members have found themselves frustrated by the lack of quantifiable information they have to go on.
“I’d like an analysis, apart from costs – I want to know, in terms of outcomes, what the impact will be with and without (the newer regulations on smaller developments),” Councilwoman Nancy Whitten said at an April 18 council meeting. Read more
