King Conservation District offers native plants
December 21, 2010
King Conservation District leaders are offering native trees and shrubs for conservation purposes, such as wildlife habitat, windbreaks, hedgerows, reforestation and stream enhancement.
The bare root plants do not come in pots or burlap bags. Instead, teams harvest the plants in winter as they are dormant. The district said bare root plants can be a hardy solution, plus a simple to handle, transport and plant option.
Residents can order plants and then pick them up at the district office in March. Read more
Skyline students raise thousands for Invisible Children
December 20, 2010
New: Dec. 20, 2:10 p.m.
When the Mincin sisters and fellow Skyline DECA members planned the activities for their weeklong fundraising and awareness campaign, they expected to collect about $1,000, said senior Katie Mincin.
“The goal was $1,500, at most,” said her sister, sophomore Emily Mincin.
The drive was one among numerous gift and food drives throughout the holiday season. But the Skyline leaders wanted to do more to bring attention to the Invisible Children’s efforts to free child soldiers.
After a week of T-shirt sales, coin drives, promotional videos and a staff-versus-students soccer game, Skyline DECA brought in about $4,000, the Mincins said as they sold soccer-game tickets for $1 Dec. 17. Read more
State Supreme Court rules against increased funding for special education
December 19, 2010
New: Dec. 19, 2:23 p.m.
Washington’s school districts won’t be seeing any extra funding for special education programs anytime soon.
The state Supreme Court ruled on the School Districts’ Alliance for Adequate Funding of Special Education v. State on Thursday, deciding in an 8-1 vote that the alliance did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the state under funds special education.
Both the Issaquah and Lake Washington school districts backed the lawsuit in 2004, joining 10 other districts that also called into question how the state pays for special education. Read more
Sammamish Planning Commission rejects rooster ban
December 17, 2010
New: Dec. 17, 2:18 p.m.
The roosters will live to crow another day.
The Sammamish Planning Commission voted unanimously Dec. 16 to abandon language that would have directed the city to ban or greatly limit citizens’ rights to own roosters because of a handful of neighbor complaints over the years.
The commission heard from nine rooster or chicken owners, all of whom urged the commission to keep the city’s hands off their birds. Several told the commission that the rooster issue would be better handled through the city’s noise ordinance, similar to a barking dog or loud music. Read more
State cuts cost Lake Washington schools $1.7 million, Issaquah $1 million
December 16, 2010
New: Dec. 16, 10:46 a.m.
The axe fell during the state legislature’s budget-cutting special session Dec. 11 and schools in Sammamish were among the targets.
Faced with a $1.1 billion deficit following voter repeal and rejection of several taxes in November, the legislature cut tens of millions from social services, low-income health care, state employee pay and schools. Lake Washington School District saw a $1.7 million cut while Issaquah School District will lose about $1 million.
Elementary schools in particular are affected, with a majority of the cuts coming from funding designed keep K-4 class sizes low. Read more
Shoreline plan will cost city another $30,000, at least
December 15, 2010
New: December 15, 10:32 a.m.
The extra $30,000 that Sammamish will pay for consulting services to help rewrite its shoreline regulations to state standards doesn’t surprise some on the City Council.
On Dec. 7, the council approved extending the length and dollar amount of agreements with Rebecca Chaney and ESA Adolfson, two contractors doing the nitty gritty work on the city’s Shoreline Master Plan, which remains under review by the Washington State Department of Ecology. ESA Adolfson handles the scientific analysis for the project, while Chaney is in charge of the administrative end – organizing the public meetings and hundreds of pages of data on the project. Winds and rain knock out power, close roads
December 14, 2010
New: Dec. 14, 2:44 p.m.
A wet weekend followed by a blustery Monday evening has led to some power outages and flooded roads in Sammamish.
Approximately 300 homes are without power Dec. 14, most of which are west of Beaver Lake, Puget Sound Energy spokeswoman Meghan Fitzpatrick said. There are also scattered outages off East Lake Sammamish Parkway and Inglewood Hill Road.
