Girls basketball
Eastlake
The day after the Eastlake girls basketball team improved to 6-0, head coach Sara Goldie’s mentor called to congratulate her, Goldie said. Her mentor observed a characteristic Goldie has worked to instill in the Lady Wolves from day one — playing fearless. It finally manifested itself in the heat of a game.
Despite a rough start Dec. 21, Eastlake beat the visiting Garfield Bulldogs 51-41 in the final league game of 2010.

Coaching basketball is in Richard Belcher’s blood. The sport has been such a part of his life and career since young adulthood that he even met his wife, Jill, 29 years ago while he was coaching her brother’s team in California.
In his 27 seasons coaching basketball from Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. to Newport and Eastlake high schools, Belcher helped develop the skills and work ethic of hundreds of youth, including 17 players who went on to play Division-1 or professional ball, according to his resume.

Taking attendance at Sammamish City Council
December 27, 2010
New: Dec. 27, 1:03 p.m.
Though most City Council members have full-time day jobs and families at home, they all agree that they owe it to the Sammamish voters who put them there to do that job the best they can — whether it’s staying engaged with community concerns, digesting complicated policy documents or simply attending meetings.
A year-end check of council meeting attendance shows that all-in-all council members attend a vast majority of meetings in which they make formal decisions. The city does not log attendance for study sessions and informal joint meetings that occur every month or so.
No Councilmember had perfect attendance for the 31 special or regular meetings in 2010. Councilman John Curley led the group with six absences (19 percent of the meetings), followed by Councilman John James with four (13 percent) and Councilwoman Michele Petitti with three (10 percent), according to meeting minutes. At about 1:30 a.m. Dec. 15, Angela Gillis and her children abruptly awoke to the cacophony of a tree crashing through their kitchen in north Sammamish.
The windstorm that night caused an immense tree to literally split their single-story rambler in two. The rain poured in, soaking the furniture, insulation and everything else exposed by the hole in the roof, said Angela and her son, Sam Gillis, an Eastlake High School senior.
“It was a mess,” she said.

December 23, 2010
New: Dec. 23, 10:47 a.m.
If you took the yarn that went into the knit tree art in front of Eastlake High School and stretched it from end to end, you’d be on Snoqualmie Pass.
Approximately 38.6 miles of yarn went into the winter-themed tree sock project, which was spearheaded and funded almost entirely by local residents Beth Newfield and Suzanne Tidwell.

The stumps are covered in colorful yarn that the artists hope to change with the seasons. Contributed
