Skyline’s Katie Kinnear swam the 100-yard freestyle in the KingCo prelims Oct. 29, qualifying for state. It wasn’t enough. Although she managed to shave a half-second off of her time for finals, Kinnear had hoped for faster. She settled for a winning time of 52.41 seconds in the finals Oct. 30 at Mary Wayte Pool on Mercer Island.
“I’m happy with it,” Kinnear said. “I just wanted to win.”
Kinnear led Skyline to a third-place finish at the KingCo 3A and 4A meet. Skyline tallied 426 points, Newport won with 603 points and the Eastlake swim and dive team placed ninth with a score of 239 points.

Kinnear, Jessie Dart, Nina Zook and Maria Volodkevich opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in a 4A state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 52.48 seconds.
Eastlake’s Kara Beauchamp took charge in the 500-yard freestyle. Although her prelim time (5:17.59) was good enough for state, she posted a better one in the finals (5:16.94) to take first place ahead of Juanita’s Hanna Armstrong.
Beauchamp led the entire race, but Armstrong narrowed the lead with a strong kick in the final six laps.
“I feel pretty good, but my best time was from last year at state,” Beauchamp said. “Armstrong in lane two pushed me.”
Beauchamp said the competition at KingCo was as tough as any year.
“I just try to go out fast and try to, like, hold it,” she said.

Beauchamp and Kinnear, former teammates at Eastlake, went head-to-head in the 100-yard breaststroke race and almost finished two-three. Kinnear finished second in a state-qualifying 1:09.50 and Beauchamp took fourth with a time of 1:11.07. Even while at another school, Kinnear still swims with her Eastlake counterparts on club teams, she said.
She also said she is happy overall with her first season at Skyline. She qualified for state in all of her freestyle events.
“I still miss Eastlake,” Kinnear said.
In the diving competition, Eastlake’s Mackenzie Rands took second in KingCo with a score of 396 points. Juanita’s Celia Pinczower won with a score of 408.5.
Skyline (Meghan O’Keefe, Zook, Stephanie Munoz and Kinnear) took fourth overall in the 400-yard freestyle relay finals, posting a state-qualifying time of 3:46.41.
Skyline’s Volodkevich qualified for state and finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.11). And sophomore Munoz swam the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.23 to place second. Ballard’s Annemarie Thayer took first, setting a KingCo meet record with a time of 1:55.00.
Skyline and Eastlake swimmers will vie for more state-qualifying times at the district meet Nov. 6 at the University of Washington. The 4A state meet is Nov. 12 and 13 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
