Arbor School plants pinwheels for world peace

The nearly 90 students at Arbor School in Sammamish got to start their day “planting” pinwheels in the grass along 228th Avenue Southeast Sept. 21. Students from kindergarten through sixth grade filed a dozen at a time across the parking lot to the school’s reader board, across from Skyline High School and lined the sidewalk with colorful, custom painted pinwheels.

New advisory class strives to foster school community

When Pacific Cascade Middle School teacher Caroline Friesen asked which clubs and sports her students had joined, she wasn’t going off-topic in a humanities conversation, and she wasn’t engaging in chitchat between classes.

After a Brian Mogg birdie on the third hole at Sahalee Country Club, things were looking up for the Skyline boys golf team Sept. 23.
Of all the matches the guys wanted to win this season, a win over Eastlake on its home course would have given Skyline some needed confidence in the hot KingCo 4A race.

Sammamish nears deal to get a new recreation center

Sammamish appears close to finalizing a contract with the Boys and Girls Club for the operation of a recreation center in the old library on the corner of 228th Avenue and Inglewood Hill Road.

The building, purchased by the city in 2009 for $3.4 million, will be leased to the Boys and Girls Club of King County for a dollar a year in exchange for the club providing after-school activities for teens, according to a briefing on the agreement by Parks Director Jessi Ricardson at the City Council’s Sept. 20 study session. Sammamish council makes more Town Center decisions

With months of public comment behind them, the Sammamish City Council rolled up their sleeves and attempted make changes large and small to the Town Center development regulations.

Among the proposals considered at their Sept. 21 meeting were:

To lower the maximum height of buildings and include rooftop structures like chimneys, elevator shafts and air conditioning units in the height restrictions.  The plan currently allows buildings up to six stories tall in the densest areas of Town Center.  Councilman Tom Odell proposed that buildings be kept to 50 feet, including their rooftop structures. Contractor kills deer, gets charged for it

A landscaper working on the Southeast 20th Street construction project, who seems to bring a bow and arrow with him to work, will likely be charged with a misdemeanor for killing a deer with the weapon.

Police say the 46-year-old Arlington man shot a deer that was grazing in a vacant field south of Southeast 20th Street near 222nd Avenue at around 7:40 a.m. Sept. 21. The man did not retrieve the deer and went about his work for the day, according to a Sammamish Police report. Read more

County asking for sales tax increase

Hey buddy, can you spare a dime? Well, actually, can you spare two cents on every $10 purchase?
King County officials say that is what is required to avoid drastic cuts in criminal justice and public safety services. Voters will decide in the Nov. 2 election whether to increase the county sales tax by two-tenths of a cent to minimize layoffs of sheriff’s deputies, prosecutors, public defenders and court employees.
