The Sammamish City Council’s decision to allow developers to count 600-square-foot housing units as a half-unit for development purposes raises more questions than answers.
The allowance of half-units marks a potential major change to the Town Center plan. Where before the plan had called for a 2,000-unit maximum for housing units in Town Center, that target now looks more like a floor than a ceiling. As the plan was debated and created through the years, those concerned arrived at the 2,000 number, plus some extra for affordable housing.

Barbara Imig Foster, age 75, died peacefully at home in Sammamish Friday, Sept. 17, 2010 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
She is survived by her daughter Anne (Foster) Foley and her husband Brendan Foley and grandsons Danny and Connor of Sammamish; her son Andrew C. Foster and his wife Catherine (Hottenrott) Foster and grandchildren Brady, Luke, and Lexi of Concord, Calif. Read more

Washington is one of seven states that doesn’t have an income tax.
For proponents of Initiative 1098, which would institute the tax on the state’s richest 1.2 percent of earners, this is a structural imbalance that has led the state to rely too heavily on the sales tax, which is highly volatile and disproportionately affects the poor.
The initiative’s opponents say the lack of an income tax is a competitive advantage over other states – a draw for prospective business investment and jobs during an uncertain economy. And it’s only a matter of time, they say, before the income tax would be rolled down to cover residents in every income bracket.

The city will spend up to $30,000 to analyze how high the water level is in Lake Sammamish, though the city of Bellevue and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers already have their own numbers on the subject.
At the City Council’s Sept. 21 meeting the council gave City Manager Ben Yazici approval to sign a contract with Northwest Environmental Consulting for the work, which will take place throughout 2011. The exact scope of the services has yet to be determined.

TerriLyn “TL” Folkman Grundvig, 41, ended her inspiring and courageous four-year battle with breast cancer on Friday, Sept. 10, 2010.
TerriLyn was born in Bellevue, to Dr. Robert and Patricia Folkman.
She grew up in Issaquah, where she attended Sunny Hills Elementary School and Pine Lake Junior High School, and graduated from Issaquah High School in 1987.
TerriLyn was born with a zest for life and from an early age developed a love of adventure, sports, family and friends.

More than 30 Eastside artists are converging on Sammamish City Hall Oct. 9 and 10 to show off and sell their work in what is slated to be the largest Sammamish Art Fair yet.
The fair, in its fourth year as a major community event, will not only bring some of Sammamish’s top artists to one place, but will also entertain families and children with various interactive activities at City Hall and the Sammamish Library, according to event organizers.

After seven years of anguish, Michelle Moulton received a new liver Sept. 1. and after 17 days in the hospital, she is back home.
“There were times when I didn’t know if it was worth it,” Michelle said. “But the new liver, once it went in, it was like, perfect.”
Moulton had a couple setbacks during her stay at the University of Washington Medical Center.

Demetra Coyer, a 2007 Eastlake graduate, is attempting to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Coyer, whose mother, Marikay Coyer was named 2008 Mrs. Washington, has spent the past six months refining her poise, developing her wardrobe and improving her interview skills to compete to be Miss Washington USA 2010.
The mother and daughter competed in different pageants but both entail being judged in an interview, swimsuit and evening gown, Demetra Coyer said. That’s why Marikay Coyer is her daughter’s coach.
