Issaquah District launches new networking service

Forget Facebook. Issaquah School District students, teachers and parents will soon be connected online with a site dedicated to advancing education.
This fall, every student in the district will get usernames to Issaquah Connect, a secure social networking site run from the district’s server.
“This is a virtual extension of our classrooms,” Executive Director of Educational Technology Colleen Dixon said. “This is the world, this is how we interact, how we get information and how we talk to each other in many ways.” Read more
Immunizations: what parents need to know

State law requires a variety of immunizations for students prior to them entering school and while they are in the school system.
Students must be immunized against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, poliomyelitis, varicella (chickenpox) measles, rubella, mumps and hepatitis B. Read more

Cyclists are not traffic calming devices
I too was horrified to read that city staff told the City Council that intermixing bikes with traffic would help slow down traffic speeds and conform better with the city’s vision of a dense, pedestrian friendly Town Center.
As Christopher Schindler pointed out in the Aug. 4 Forum, cyclists should not be used as ‘speed bumps.’
I have lived in Sammamish for 17 years, and cycle 200 miles or more a week. Read more

3 men likely to be sent to Mexico after hanging flyers

Three Renton men may be deported from the country after Sammamish Police stopped them for hanging fliers on door handles without a required license.
*Jose Barrera Hernandez, 34, Eddy Romo Becerra, 31, and Gabriel Hernandes, 31, were with Professional Interior and Exterior Painting and were stopped on the 21600 block of Northeast 20th Way at around 1 p.m. Aug. 4. Read more
William ‘Bill’ Macham

William “Bill” Macham died at home in Sammamish surrounded by his loving family on Aug. 8, 2010. He was 68.
Friends are invited to a celebration of life and open house from 3-7 p.m. at the family’s home in Sammamish on Saturday, Aug. 21.
Bill was born July 1, 1942 in Rochdale, England, to William and Gladys Macham. At age 5, his parents moved to Vancouver, B.C., Canada, where he was raised.
Local families raise money to fight rare genetic disorder

Three years ago, Claire Benn was born. A week later, she was diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome.
“We didn’t know what the diagnosis Prader-Willi meant, so the lack of knowledge was very scary,” said Claire’s mother, Cari Benn.
Prader-Willi is a random, non-inherited genetic syndrome that affects the 15th chromosome.
How Xavier Graham spent his summer vacation

What do Lady Gaga and 13-year-old Xavier Graham from Sammamish have in common? They both went to genius camp. At 12, Xavier did better on the SAT than many graduating seniors, with a 480 verbal and 630 math score.
As early as one and a half years old, Lambert Graham knew his son was special.
“He started grabbing the phonics book,” Graham said.
