Sammamish still wants an aquatics center

Sammamish residents have spoken and they want an aquatic center.
At least that’s what’s to be believed if you take stock in telephone surveys. At the July 20 City Council meeting, Parks and Recreation Director Jessi Richardson presented the findings of a survey of 400 residents on what sort of parks and recreation facilities they’d like to see in Sammamish. Northeast Division District Court judge’s race draws 3 candidates

Voters will choose from three candidates in the Aug. 17 primary election for a King County District Court judge serving the Northeast Division.
Newcastle’s Donna Tucker, Mercer Island’s Ketu Shah and Redmond’s Larry Mitchell are running for the position. The county created the position last year to address a growing caseload. Read more

German students learn English by learning Issaquah

This summer, three German teens are getting a more vivid lesson in English and American culture than their eighth-grade textbook, which features Issaquah, could give them.
For three weeks, Isabelle Joswig, 15, Annabell Schoeberl, 13, and Celina Mueller, 14, all from Bad Salzig, Germany, are living with Sammamish residents Susan Gregory and David Stevens thanks to the connection they found in their English textbook.

Shuttle bus ride part of the Senior Open experience

The first day of championship rounds July 29 saw more than 20,000 spectators flock to Sahalee Country Club, potentially a record for any U.S. Senior Open opening round, said championship director Mike Zinga.

Be careful not to overfish

My dad takes me out fishing on Beaver Lake quite often in the summer. Sometimes we don’t catch much, but other times; we encounter two-pound bass and rainbow trout. One time, I even caught a catfish! King County only releases about 10,000-15,000 fish in the lake every year. We only do catch and release, to make sure that next year, there will be fish to catch. Read more

Lakeside Recovery falls short of state title

Lakeside Recovery survived thunder and lightning but the Senior team just didn’t have enough electricity to energize its way to another AAA American Legion state championship.

Washington fails to get Race to the Top school dollars

It’s official. Washington is out of the running for the Race to the Top federal education grant program.
On July 27, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced 19 states as finalists advancing to the next round. Washington was not among them.
Race to the Top is an incentive-based grant program that asked states to submit bold education reform packages addressing assessment, teaching standards and professional development, early childhood education, increasing graduation rates and requirements, and closing the achievement gap. Read more
