Beavers, turtles, deer and ducks!

July 20, 2010

The sunset in the clear blue sky gives way to perfect visibility. I spot one head above the water with sticks in its mouth. Then I see a mother duck with tiny babies behind her. Finally, I see two deer walking across a meadow. One is a mother, and the other a baby so small that it still has white spots on its back.
These are some of the animals that live in and around Beaver Lake. They generally live in harmony with the people on the lake, but recently a few of them created trouble and the city brought fast action against them. Read more

Mug Fussell is Sammamish’s new citizen

July 20, 2010

Meg Fussell, a 2010 Eastlake High School graduate, moved from Basingstoke, U.K. to Sammamish with her family 10 years ago. Her father got a job at Microsoft and her three siblings received their citizenship when he got his. But Fussell decided to wait until she was 18 to apply to be a U.S. citizen.
Fussell celebrated Independence Day with a particular excitement and vigor this year, she said. She actually ran around touting, ‘I’m an American,” during the nighttime fireworks with family, she said.

When Brad Decater was drafted in the 43rd round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, he wasn’t sure about playing full-time pro ball, he said.
He had earned an associate’s degree from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif. but wanted to continue with school for at least another year, he said.
He played one season with the Matadors of Cal State Northridge this year and had been told he would likely be drafted again, he said.
By the end of the season, his scout had not called in about a month, though.

July 19, 2010

New: July 19, 2:33 p.m.

World record holders often display some type of quirky talent, and the redheads gathering in Sammamish were no exception. After all, it is an innate talent to carry two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16. These genes cause a change in the MC1R protein, which regulates skin and hair color.

“I love being a redhead,” Jennifer Phillips, of Mukilteo, said. “It’s fun to see everyone together at one time.”

July 16, 2010

New: July 16, 4:22 p.m.

Local business owners put in their two cents about ways Sammamish could become more environmentally and economically sustainable at a Sammamish Chamber of Commerce luncheon July 15.

Kamuron Gurol, director of the city’s Community Development department, spoke of the city’s current efforts to reduce resource consumption, including doing online business licensing, installing lighting fixtures that don’t turn on when natural light is available, installing a compost bin outside the lunch room and the recent replacement of the city’s fleet of six Ford Taureses with five hybrid Ford Escapes through a federal grant. The new vehicles get 10 miles more for every gallon of gas, he said. Read more
