Ehrik Aldana recently took another step toward someday becoming a lawmaker.
In late June, the Skyline incoming senior was elected governor at the annual Evergreen Boys State convention. The program, a weeklong government simulation camp, is put on by the American Legion.

Michael Harris’ novel inspired by time in Sammamish

Former longtime Sammamish resident Michael Harris lived in the city during what seemed to be his best years. He owned a software company, raised a family here and played golf with close friends at Sahalee Country Club.
But he was always thinking about the concept of love and how men struggle to love people in their lives truly, he said.

Morton Daniel Wiener

Morton Daniel Wiener, of Sammamish, died Friday, July 16 at home. He was 79. Wiener was born Dec. 4, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Irving and Hannah Wiener. He was raised in Brooklyn where he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. Following high school, Wiener furthered his education at New York University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1951. Read more

Fire ravages home in Sammamish’s Summer Ridge neighborhood

Jason Nault said he had been treating his home’s wooden deck on Saturday and left a pile of used rags on a garbage can outside the home. Nault said he specifically left the rags out to dry, knowing that oily rags piled in an enclosed space can spontaneously combust.

That is exactly what happened July 25 as the oily rags apparently ignited and caused a major fire in the Summer Ridge neighborhood.

Sammamish inventor created Skwim, a new water sport

For years, Sammamish resident Kevin McCarthy had an idea for a new water sport bouncing around in his head. The innovator and athletic-product developer has always seemed have an idea or knack for ergonomics and sports design — in fact, that’s what he studied in college.

McCarthy helped develop popular products like Crocs shoes, as well as various aquatic products for Nike and Speedo, he said.

Sammamish City Council approves Beaver Lake Park master plan

The Sammamish City Council unanimously approved a “roadmap” for the future of Beaver Lake Park, which includes a swimming beach, separate fishing area, more parking and lighted sports fields.

The master plan, approved at the July 20 meeting, comes with an approximate $11 million price tag, but council members and city staff were careful to note that any work would be done in small chunks as money became available.

Sammamish annexes Aldarra and Montaine

The Aldarra and Montaine neighborhoods officially became part of Sammamish July 15.

A month-long period allowing opponents to appeal to King County Superior Court passed without any legal challenges to the annexation of the 93 acres and 273 single-family homes that make up the neighborhoods. Read more
