Sammamish rowers paddle in nationals

Six Sammamish youth helped the Sammamish Rowing Association earn top-15 finishes in three national rowing championships June 11-13 at the Youth National championships in Cincinnati.
The Sammamish residents were among 31 association rowers who participated in the national event, the most of any single rowing group in the country, the release said.

Eastlake’s principal leaving

Eastlake High School principal Greg Schellenberg is moving to Shanghai, China, he said June 14.
The decision to leave the high school after just one year came around Memorial Day weekend, he said.
It was an opportunity to work at an international school in Shanghai. Initially, Schellenberg and his wife, Angela, who owns a business with ties to China, declined the job offer twice, he said. Read more

Sammamish releases plan to study barricades

City Engineer Laura Philpot laid out the process the city will use to evaluate its barricade situation during a June 14 City Council work session.

The city has developed a way to evaluate each barricade individually, and hopes to start with one of the more problematic barricades, on Southeast 32nd Street.

Barricades are an often-contentious issue that has sprung up around town. As the city was built, sometimes two developments with a connecting road would have a barricade placed at roughly the border of the two subdivisions. Read more

Sammamish veteran returns to Pearl Harbor

Gerald Treacy Sr. returned to Pearl Harbor for the first time in more than 60 years. Contributed

On Dec. 3, 1941, Gerald Treacy Sr. was called away from Hickam Field, adjacent to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii to attend his father’s funeral. Four days later, he was in New Jersey when the Japanese attacked. At Hickam alone, 121 men were killed, and 274 were wounded.

“I would’a been right there,” Treacy said.

Freed House gets moral support from City Council

Sammamish working toward sustainability

The city is continuing its efforts to be more eco-friendly, and will produce a report detailing its efforts later this year.

The City Council adopted a policy outlining broad policy goals for enhancing Sammamish’s sustainability — essentially using its resources to work toward being more environmentally friendly, and toward reaching larger regional and global goals. Read more

EFR’s choice of charity feels like a kick back

Something doesn’t feel right about the Eastside Fire & Rescue Board of Directors directing charity funds to, essentially, itself.
Each year, as part of EFR’s contract with ambulance company AMR, the private company makes a donation to a charity of EFR’s choice.
Last year it was area food banks. This year, some of the money went to a group which helps fight prescription drug abuse among teens.
The lion’s share went to the Eastside Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, a group that buys equipment for EFR’s firefighters. Read more
