No to Town Center

I thought the March Sammamish city newsletter’s “Town Center: Prudent approach pays dividends” meant a check was in the mail. No luck. Instead it was disturbing to see it adopt special interest extortion tactics like “the Town Center will adsorb growth and help protect existing neighborhoods from the impacts of more indiscriminate development.” Even worse, it conflicts with state law. Grassless dog park reopens in Beaver Lake Park

May 18, 2010

Sally Uffenes sat on a bench at the off-leash dog area of Beaver Lake Park and contemplated the pros and cons of the new mulch. She pointed to her black poodle, Charlie, who was coughing from the sawdust kicking up.

The City Council appears to have run out of options: Sammamish residents living outside of the Sahalee neighborhood will have to drive to Redmond and board a bus to attend the U.S. Senior Open in their own city.
Plans to add a shuttle route between Eastlake High School and Sahalee Country Club were all but squashed May 11. Read more

May 18, 2010

Four years ago, Angelo Gonzalez, 15, and Manuela Acevedo, 13, didn’t have a whole lot of hope. Day-to-day life was a struggle in the poverty stricken rural town of Dario, Nicaragua. Angelo had no interest in learning or working toward a goal, he said.
Something changed inside of both of them, they said, after they found a school, built and run by members of Sammamish-based Evergreen Christian Fellowship.
“Now I have interest in my whole life,” Angelo said in Spanish from the Dario Christian Academy in Nicaragua. He wants to be a mechanical engineer. Read more

Eastside Catholic sees consequences of bad choices

May 18, 2010

Hailey Odegard, an Eastside Catholic junior, thought it would be interesting to know what it was like to play a car-crash victim. So she went along with it when she was asked to be part of the school’s bi-annual DUI car crash simulation.
Odegard and seven other student-actors worked with school administrators, Sammamish Police and members of Eastside Fire & Rescue to stage a fake collision in front of her peers May 12. The actors played victims and a drunk driver in a collision, complete with bloody makeup and destroyed vehicles.
