Events
- King County community forums will sponsor a series of community discussions revolving around the topic “Public Trust: Customer Service and Public Engagement.” They are designed for area residents to discuss their interactions with the county government. The forums will run through June 13 at locations around the county. To register and find a local forum, visit www.CommunityForums.org.
- The Sammamish Art Fair is putting out a call for submissions for this year’s show. The deadline to submit work to this juried event is May 27. The fair itself is scheduled for Oct. 9 and 10. For more information e-mail SammamishArtFair@gmail.com or visit www.sammamishartfair.wordpress.com.

- A Nightmare at Beaver Lake volunteer picnic, for people interested in volunteering in the Halloween scare fest, is scheduled for noon-4 p.m. June 5 at Beaver Lake Park, near the pavilion.

- A mobile mammography facility will be available for Sammamish residents. The mobile facility features the same equipment used at Evergreen Hospital, but you do not need to be an Evergreen patient to use the facility. It is available from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Evergreen Primary Care Center, 22850 Northeast Eighth Street. For an appointment, call 899-2831.
Religious/spiritual
- Faith United Methodist Church offers “Faith Cafe” for women of all ages. The café features drop-in coffee time, scrapbooking/stamping, mom & baby playgroup, quilting/knitting and walking group. - Healing Prayer Service. If you have a physical, emotional or spiritual challenge or if you desire to make space for God in a peaceful setting, attend the Missio Lux Healing Prayer Service the fourth Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at Pine Lake Covenant Church, 1715 228th Ave. S.E., Sammamish.

- Sammamish Presbyterian Church is hosting a series of different fitness classes, Wednesdays and Fridays 6:30-7:30 a.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30-9:30 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-3 p.m. For more information, contact Billie Donahue 785-2880. Classes are free and no registration is required.
- The Issaquah Sammamish Interfaith Coalition is hosting English Language Classes at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at Pine Lake Covenant Church.
Library activities
- How to start a business, a seminar that teaches about steps necessary to start a new business is at 10:15 a.m. June 8.
- Pajama Story Time, for ages 2-6, with adult, will start at 7 p.m. June 28. Come in your pajamas and enjoy stories, signs, puppets, movement and music. Space is limited.
- Musik Nest for ages 2-3, with adult, will start at 10:30 a.m. June 18 and 7 p.m. June 23 Share songs, dance, rhythm and new ways to enjoy music with your toddler.
- Toddler Story Time for children age 2-3 years will meet at 10 and 11 a.m. June 30.
- Talk Time provides conversation practice for adults who want to improve their language skills. Talk time starts at 7 p.m. June 1, 8 and 15.
- Hello English! an ESL class for beginners is at 10 a.m. June 1. Registration is required.
- The Mother-Daughter Book Group will discuss “Room One: A Mystery or Two” by Andrew Clements at 7 p.m. June 30 for girls 10-13 years old and their mothers.
- The Sammamish Book Group will meet at 7 p.m. June 16. This month, the club is doing a free read.
Students look at graduation in a tough economy

The University of Washington was always at the top of Colin Katagiri’s list of colleges to attend. The Eastlake senior figured he would live in the dorms and experience life in Seattle, but still be close to home in Sammamish, he said.
But when he understood the extra expense of living out of the house, Katagiri decided to save his parents a couple of thousand dollars a year by commuting to school. His father had been laid off and Colin felt he could be responsible by making the decision, he said. Read more
Sammamish streetlights might get makeover

The forest green poles have frills that wing out from the middle of their necks. Mounted to the top is a floral-like T with double-mast arms snaking out in soft curves.
For Mark Cross, it just looks wrong.
The city councilman is trying to get the city to change its design standards for streetlights, so developers have the latitude to install light poles that fit with the décor of neighborhood. Read more

It was late, hours after the bustle of high schoolers and preteens had died down. No more pick-up games on the basketball court. No moms nudging strollers through the upper mezzanine of the park. The parking lots had emptied around the time the sun went down.
That’s when they shuffled onto the concrete bowl and started gliding along the rails, tipping back onto their boards’ back wheels, traveling in parabolas, blowing off steam.

Teens step up for Sammamish Youth Board

The crowd was sparse as Sammamish Farmers Market organizers and city staff prepared to open in the pouring rain May 19. But when the Cascade Ridge Elementary marimba ensemble began to play its jovial tunes under the covered area, parents and Sammamish residents flocked to the Sammamish Commons to help bring in the market’s third season.
Sammamish Mayor Don Gerend swung the cowbell to ring in the start of the 2010 market season.
