Eastside Catholic students hold sit-in to question faculty cuts

Eastside Catholic is likely to cut about 20 percent of its faculty for the 2010-2011 school year.
In response, about 200 students organized a two-hour sit-in May 17, gathering in a courtyard and waiting for a school official to explain the teacher cuts.
Sister Mary Tracy, president and head of the school, met with the protesting students and followed up with lunches in her office. Read more

Sammamish councilman wants to pull out invasive weeds

Mark Cross brought more than his briefcase to the May 18 City Council meeting.
Cross came armed with long stalk of Japanese knotweed, a non-native invasive weed crowding out indigenous plants along Sammamish shorelines.
“It is something that we do want to get rid of,” Cross said.

Local veterans remember their fallen comrades

Stan Gunno, of Sammamish, entered the Air Force right out of high school in the 1970s. He thought it would be a good way to develop his job experience while paying for college, he said. He spent the next four years working in administration and eventually became a special investigator, chasing spies around the world and protecting presidents, he said. Read more

Longtime Eastlake science teacher, John Tripp, dies

Eastlake junior Sylvia Joo will always remember teacher John Tripp’s smile and kind demeanor in class. He was always willing to help and seemed to engage Joo and her classmates with hands-on exercises and a welcoming approach.
Tripp, a longtime science teacher at Eastlake High School, died May 6 after battling cancer for three years. He was 53. Tripp was married to Terry Tripp for 29 years, They have three children Bryson, 25, Marta, 23, and Emily, 20. The family lives in Kirkland.

Eastside Catholic student explains last week’s sit-in

At Eastside Catholic, the students love their teachers. This was proven by the much talked about walk out on May 18. Students came back to school after their prom weekend to find out that 13 faculty members were laid off. Eastside students were told in the winter that they would be losing their president and principal. They were leaving by choice, not layoffs. We students were saddened by this and anxious to find out who would be taking their spots. Sister Mary Tracy was hired in the winter and began her Eastside Catholic career as Head of School in April. Students respect her and appreciate how hard she is working to make positive changes in the school. Read more

Plateau athletes tops at track and field districts

The Skyline boys won the 4A SeaKing District Track and Field meet May 22 at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.
The Eastlake boys track team finished third.
The Spartans tallied 101 points, ahead of Skyview, which had 76 points. The Wolves finished with 61 points. Read more

Eastlake fastpitch season ends

After the rains subsided enough to play a KingCo 4A tournament double-header May 21, the Eastlake fastpitch team came close against Bothell and lost its last-chance game to Redmond at Hartman Park.

Skyline baseball playoff run ends

It was a rough way to end the season for the Skyline baseball team May 22. The Spartans made 4A regionals after winning all the right games at the end of the regular season.

Skyline’s Connor Cree chooses UW

Skyline junior defensive end Connor Cree announced his verbal committment May 14 to play for the University of Washington, according to his father, David Cree.
Connor Cree, a standout player on the 2009 state-champ Spartans football team, said he chose the UW at the last minute after considering offers from Boise State, Washington State, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Connecticut. Read more

Lake Stevens dashes Skyline’s state soccer tourney hopes

After beating Puyallup 3-0 in the first round of the state tournament May 18, the Skyline Spartans soccer team was eliminated in a 2-1 loss to Lake Stevens May 22.
Skyline struck first against Lake Stevens when James Molyneaux-Elliot scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute. Skyline carried the 1-0 lead into the second half but Nick Bylin, with the help of Tanner Sellars, scored the equalizer in the 65th minute. Read more
