Issaquah school board got it right

The Issaquah School Board knows how to have a retreat. Like most every elected government agency, the board wanted to get together for an in-depth, wide-ranging discussion and goal setting.
Sometimes regular meetings can be so packed with business that officials don’t have time to bring up an off-the-wall solution to a difficult problem.
To address this, many groups hold retreats for extended discussions. These retreats can be valuable for both content and team building.
Retreats become problematic when the elected officials go miles away from the people they are supposed to represent.
In the past few months, the Sammamish City Council and the Lake Washington School Board have each held a retreat in a distant location, making the discussions effectively secret.
The Issaquah School Board, however, held their retreat in the heart of the school district. Anyone who wanted to come and see government at work could do so.
The Issaquah School Board proved it is possible to hold productive discussions without traveling dozens of miles and asking taxpayers to pay for overnight lodging. Good job.
