Homeowners aren’t paying their stormwater fees

Officials in the city’s Finance Department reported a sharp increase in unpaid storm water management fees in 2009.
The city billed residents $2.4 million in stormwater management fees, but $95,307 of that money never came in. That’s 3.97 percent of the total amount billed, up from 0.27 percent in 2008 and 0.08 percent in 2007. Read more

Sammamish boys start fund to help their camp friends

Sammamish resident Alec Baer and his three best friends, Arend Broekmate, Billy Dimlow and Brooks Meadowcroft, have always been able to attend summer camp on Orcas Island. They love the annual monthlong getaway so much they actually attended both sessions in 2009, Baer said.

2 Issaquah School District youth are in the top 10 in state geography bee

The event was part of the National Geographic Bee program. Kumar, a sixth-grader at Beaver Lake Middle School, and Hiray, of Issaquah Middle School, placed in the top 10, according to event coordinator Evelyn McNeal. Although they did not advance to the national geography bee, Kumar and Hiray beat out more than 90 other finalists during the hours-long event.

Wesley Esko, a seventh-grader at Pine Lake Middle School, made it to state, but did not place in the top 10, McNeal said.
Two other Issaquah School District students participated in the state competition: Keegan Kylstra, of Maywood Middle School, and Sharda Raina, of Apollo Elementary School.

Beaver Lake students reach out to the world

BLOCK [Beaver Lake Outreach Community Kids] recently presented a slideshow to all the Beaver Lake Middle School students. We saw numerous pictures from South Africa, where poverty stricken families are facing very tough times. We students learned how HIV/AIDS is affecting the country, and how we can help. The members of BLOCK told us, “We found that a formal education is key in finding a successful job in that country.” BLOCK’s motto for the South African Humanitarian Drive was “Where Kids Really do Help Kids!” Read more
