If you’re one of the state’s 286,597 boat and watercraft owners, get used to having a little less mail.

The state’s Department of Licensing is doing away with its paper license renewal notices and switching to e-mail reminders instead.

One can still read reminders through the agency’s blog (http://licensingexpress.wordpress.com/) and Facebook page.

The agency also sends out reminders for cars and trucks, but those are scheduled to continue. Car and truck owners can opt into the e-mail reminder system.

The agency saves about 55 cents each time it doesn’t send a piece of mail reminder to a boat owner to renew his or her license; that translates into saving $150,000 per year, according to an agency press release.

To sign up for the e-mail renewal notices, go to www.dol.wa.gov. Boat owners can also sign up at their neighborhood vehicle licensing office.
