Spring sports start with hopes for a postseason
March 23, 2010
Spring sports are bringing the local athletes back outside onto the diamond and the track.
Baseball
Skyline
The Skyline Spartans are gearing up for life without ace pitcher Adrian Sampson and workhorse pitcher Jared Lemke.
Skyline went 15-8 overall in 2009 (11-5 league) and coach Chris Tamminen hopes his few returning starters will step up big this season to give hard-hitting Redmond a run for its money.
“I’m thinking our pitching is still going to be strong,” Tamminen said.
Key returners include outfielder Sean Penberthy and pitcher Connor Lawhead, both seniors.
Tamminen added a slew of senior newcomers to the roster in 2010, including pitchers Jayce Nelson, Jim Carnes and Ryan Weideman.
The Spartans will look to infielders Jake Opitz and Aaron Caditz and outfielders Anthony DeMatteo and Michael Smith for leadership and quick thinking in the field.
The key to success this season: focus on the fundamentals, Tamminen said.
“We have to make sure we have good team chemistry and do all the little things right,” he said.
Games to watch: Newport at Skyline, 3:45 p.m. March 25 and Skyline at Newport, 4 p.m., April 26; Skyline at Issaquah, 3:45 p.m. March 29 and Issaquah at Skyline, 3:45 p.m. April 28; Redmond at Skyline, 3:45 p.m. March 31 and Skyline at Redmond, 6 p.m. April 30.
Eastside Catholic
Although it’s missing last year’s standouts in pitcher Matt Boyd, infielder Michael Englund and infielder-outfielder Mike Bush, the Eastside Catholic baseball team is rearing to take Metro again in 2010.
The Crusaders went 16-6 overall in 2009 and 14-5 in Metro play, winning the league championship. But coach Kurt Boyd said the team should be able to maintain its dominance with a continued focus on pitching.
“The team will reinvent themselves from years past of the high-power offense to more of a defensive minded, pressure-offense team,” Boyd said.
They’ll do that with help from returning pitchers Sam Lindquist, Andrew Villeneuve, first-baseman Steven Leighton, outfielder Garrett DeGallier and second-baseman Bobbie Schultz.
Newcomers Ryan Gillespie, Keith Barnum and Jackson Boyle will help round out the order for Eastside Catholic.
Games to watch: Bainbridge at Eastside Catholic (Bellevue College), 3:30 p.m. March 26; O’Dea at Eastside Catholic (Bellevue College), 3:30 p.m. April 1; Eastside Catholic at Eastlake, 4 p.m. April 5; Blanchet at Eastside Catholic (Bellevue College), 3:30 p.m. April 21.
Track and Field
Skyline
The Skyline girls could be in the running for a ninth-straight KingCo title in 2010. In addition to winning KingCo in 2009, Skyline won districts for the sixth year in a row and placed fifth at state.
If returning leaders like sprinter Shea O’Donnell, hurdler Amber Dodd and triple jumper Kayli Kohlrus perform as well or better than last year, the Lady Spartans will be a force to be reckoned with in Class 4A competition.
Newcomers Haley Smith, Kassia Fortier, Ashley Richardson, Lindsey Coutts and Elise Pletcher look to round out the team this spring.
The boys of Skyline, however, are looking for better than eighth place at state this season. With all-stars like junior Kasen Williams — last year he won the state high jump title (6-10), took second in the triple jump (47-10.25) and third in the long jump (23-05) — the Spartans have a good chance.
Williams will join top returners and captains Alex Lee (sprints and relays), Mark Frerker (distance), Dustin Bratten (sprints and relays), Michael Aboud and Ben Ressler.
New coach Marc Hillestad said the current roster of 104 boys features a good mix of youth and experience.
Meets to watch: Newport at Skyline, 4 p.m. April 15; Skyline at Eastlake, 4 p.m. April 22; Skyline and Issaquah at Liberty, 4 p.m. May 6.
Eastlake
The Eastlake girls are looking to reload in 2010. In 2009, the team placed fifth at the KingCo meet. As the new season gets into full swing, the girls will rely on the experience of a few returning distance runners: Chelsea Orr (800 meters), Katelyn Steen (1,600 and 3,200 meters) and Erin Blodnick (1,600 meters).
The Eastlake boys bring back a strong corps of returners in 2010. After placing 15th overall at state last year, Daniel Jackstadt (100 meters), Jason Murray (200 meters) and Brandon Cole (400 meters) will lead the team in the sprints division.
Paul Kupcis (800) and Beau Wales (3,200) look to compete among the best in KingCo, as do pole vaulters Sean Ross and Derek Halmgrenson, triple jumper Devin Bennett and hurdler Jeff Sloat.
“We are a young team and should finish in the middle of the pack at KingCo,” said coach Steve Jones.
Meets to watch: Eastlake at Eastlake Invite, April 10; Skyline at Eastlake, 4 p.m. April 22; Eastlake at KingCo meet (at EHS track), 3:30 p.m. May 12 and 14.
