Education dollars will pay for hotel rooms

Here we go again.
This time, it’s the Lake Washington School Board that plans to take a long weekend – on the taxpayers’ nickel – so they can do public business away from, well, the public.
The plan, as with all retreats of elected officials, is to go away and talk about nagging issues without fear of being held accountable for what they say. Retreats are generally not recorded and any minutes are marginal, as was the case with the Sammamish City Council retreat. Read more

Reject Issaquah math curriculum

According to Memorandum No. 028-09M K-12 Education (for information purposes) sent to state math leaders, school principals and school district superintendents on May 4, 2009 from Randy Dorn, state Superintendent of Public Instruction, regarding high school mathematics core/comprehensive instruction materials final recommendations: “Superintendent Dorn’s final high school recommendations are based on both the work of the OSPI and the SBE as directed by statute. The final recommendation for high school is: Holt Mathematics.” Read more

Teens weigh in on rec center

Christopher Williamson, 17, doesn’t seem too concerned about whether teens think the future city recreation center is cool – they’ll use it.
“There’s not really an alternative,” he said.
Williamson is chairman of the Youth Leadership Board, a group of six high school students who interact with the City Council. The board is scheduled to make recommendations to the council April 6 about what it wants in the new recreation center. Read more

Getting an indoor aquatic center in Sammamish was either imperative or something not worth bothering with until the economy turns around — it depended on which person you asked.
A group of residents met Feb. 22 to discuss the city of Sammamish’s plans for its parks system for the next six years. It was one of a 10-part series of town hall-like meetings the city is hosting through March. Read more

King Conservation District voters will choose between five candidates for a contested board of supervisors seat in a March 16 election.

Issaquah officials say annexation key to Klahanie Park

Issaquah officials called for decisions about adding Klahanie Park to the municipal parks system to be made alongside long-term growth agreements.
Members of the Issaquah City Council Services & Safety Committee discussed the park Feb. 25. The committee followed a recommendation from the city administration to weigh decisions about the park in conjunction with potential Klahanie annexations in mind. Read more

Cold waters greeted Boy Scouts from Troop No. 609 Jan. 26.
Submerging to 60 feet underwater, 20 of the 39 troop members completed their final dive off Alki Beach for their Professional Association of Diver Instructors certification for scuba diving and their Boy Scout merit badge. Read more

Class combines technology with community service

Pine Lake Middle School eighth-graders Kyle Feuerberg and Henry Jarvis threw a Super Bowl party for 25 homeless men for their multimedia elective class.
It sounds strange, but the pair teamed up, raised money for food and goodies, found a venue and invited homeless people to hang out Feb. 7 at Saint Luke’s Church in Bellevue.
