Road project on time, on budget

The city’s construction project along 244th Avenue is on time and within budget, according to John Cunningham, the city’s director of public works.
The $9.3 million project, which had been in the works since before Sammamish became a city, got underway last July. It calls for connecting two ends of 244th Avenue, creating a new north-south road on the plateau.

Project could ease travel to shopping along Gilman
Construction should start by late April on the long-planned Interstate 90 Undercrossing, a north-south connector meant to alleviate traffic on Front Street and state Route 900 in Issaquah. For Sammamish residents, the connection will open a new way — with potentially less traffic — to access shopping on Gilman Boulevard and the Issaquah Post Office.

Labor negotiations enter new phase for Lake Washington secretaries, schools

County executive calls for reform

King County Council members praised Executive Dow Constantine as the county leader unveiled a “blueprint for reform” to reshape the way King County government operates.
The executive pledged improved customer service for taxpayers, better relationships with King County cities and the creation of a cabinet-level position dedicated to labor relations. In a March 8 address to the council, Constantine detailed his first 100 days in office. Read more
Geocaching: Not lost, but definitely found

When Sammamish resident Mitchell Smith and his family went camping in the summer of 2008, he met a man searching for treasure.
The man carried a fancy GPS device and was following clues and coordinates to reach a pre-determined destination.
Already a hiking enthusiast, Mitchell was so intrigued that he asked for a GPS for Christmas, he said. Once he got one, he began a new hobby that gets him outside more and makes for a good excuse for the Smith family to recreate together on the weekends.

Skyline rallies to help child soldiers break out

Jacob Acaye, of Northern Uganda, was abducted when he was 11 and forced into a life of violence as a child soldier in the Lord’s Resistance Army. The rebel force, led by Joseph Kony and made up of mostly youth like Acaye, has terrorized the people of Uganda and neighboring nations for 23 years, according to the Invisible Children organization.

Discovery elementary students win state team chess tournament

The five members of the Discovery Elementary School K-3 chess team are celebrating this week after winning the Washington State Team Chess Tournament March 20 in Mountlake Terrace, according to team parent Mary Jesse.
The tournament allows the budding players to gain experience in the same tournament-style format that the middle- and high-schoolers do.
