Judge: state must determine new way to fund education

In a Feb. 4 decision, King County Superior Court Judge John Erlick ruled the state isn’t living up to its obligation to education under its constitution.
“Thirty years have passed since our State Supreme Court directed the State to provide stable and dependable funding for basic education,” he said. “The State has made progress toward this Constitutional obligation, but remains out of compliance. State funding is not ample, it is not stable and it is not dependable.” Read more

Sammamish girl was a finalist for Boys & Girls club youth award

As a little girl, Madeleine Tobe used to set up a schoolhouse in her family’s garage and teach children from around her neighborhood.
She’s not sure if they learned anything substantive, the Sammamish resident said in a speech Feb. 8 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle. Edward Baker has lived on the plateau for 9 decades

To this day, Sammamish resident Edward Baker is terrified of bears. He has been ever since World War II, when he was a maintenance worker at the Four Seasons Resort on Beaver Lake. The local black bears would hang out at the garbage dump near the present site of Beaver Lake Park and scare him, said his live-in caretaker Mary Austin.Edward Baker saws some wood in the 1970’s. Sammamish starts developing

The second in a two-part series about Sammamish in the 1960s.
Last week, old icons — resorts and farms — closed as development began.
But even as some old icons disappeared during the ‘60s, new ones arose. One was the High Lonesome Ranch, located just east of 244th Avenue Northeast, about a quarter mile south of Northeast Eighth Street.
In 1960, Chris Klineburger bought the 50 acres that became the ranch, and within a year or so had built a “frontier town” to provide people with an authentic western experience. Read more

Discovery students strive to protect killdeer

Students flitted around teacher Tasha Kirby’s fourth-grade classroom on a mission Feb. 10. A deadline was looming and they were motivated to complete the final piece of a class portfolio detailing their months-long efforts to protect a local bird habitat.

Shirt sales help central Asians afford a year of school

Students at the Pacific Cascade Freshman Campus are changing the lives of their peers with education worldwide, one shirt at a time.
For $12 each, the students are selling shirts that will send a student in Afghanistan or Pakistan to school for a year through the Central Asia Institute.
“We’re learning every day, and sometimes we take that for granted,” student Anais Gentilhomme said. “We want to help others learn.” Read more

Sammamish skier chases dream in the Olympics

The dream stretched back to childhood, when Yina Moe-Lange strapped on a pair of skis and took to the slopes. Through the years and countless downhill runs, she honed her skill with a singular goal in mind: competing in the Winter Olympics.

No gymnasts go to state

Skyline and Eastlake each sent a pair of athletes to the 4A Sea-King district meet Feb. 13. But neither will see their gymnasts compete at state.
Neither Bianca Barr nor Maggen Wolk, of Eastlake, placed at the meet, but Eastlake coach Beth Chapin said they showed improvement over 2009.
Barr scored an 8.2 on vault, a 7.65 on bars and 7.6 on beam. Wolk scored a 7.8 on vault and 7.65 on bars.

Wrestlers go to next level

Five wrestlers from Sammamish schools are headed to state after strong finishes at the regional meets Feb. 13. Skyline’s Danny Christianson (152 pounds) and Anthony DeMatteo (215 pounds) will vie for a top ranking Class 4A in Tacoma Feb. 19-20. Eastlake’s Trevor McKinnon (160 pounds) will join them and Eastside Catholic’s Jake Cowin (140 pounds) and Anthony Roy (152 pounds) will grapple at the Class 3A Mat Classic the same days. Read more

Four plateau swimmers going to state

Eastlake and Skyline are each sending two swimmers to the state 4A meet in Federal Way Feb. 18-20. Eastside Catholic will also have swimmers at the state 3A competition.
In a 2010 district meet that coaches said rivaled the speed and competition of 2009 Sea-King 4A District Championships, Eastlake placed sixth overall with 82 points and Skyline placed eighth with 72 points. Inglemoor won the team title with 274 points. Read more
