February 25, 2010

New: Feb. 25, 2:22 p.m.

Yes, that feeling you have the traffic here stinks is correct. But things have gotten better in recent years, largely due to the poor economy. The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area had the ninth worst traffic in the nation, according to a recent study released by Inrix, a company which provides traffic and navigation services. The area ranks 15th in population. Read more

Curley inspires with life story

February 24, 2010

New: Feb. 24, 11:56 a.m.
In a rousing speech Feb. 18, City Councilman John Curley shared his personal Horatio Alger-like tale of a dyslexic college dropout who used people skills and dogged persistence to change the direction of his life.
An immaculate entertainer, Curley spoke with energy as he wove through a packed room, pointing to audience members and asking questions throughout the talk. The Sammamish Chamber of Commerce hosted the event at Bake’s Place at Providence Point in Issaquah Feb. 18.John Curley works the room during his talk at the Sammamish Chamber of Commerce. Freed House may have other problems

I live near one of these old pioneer houses on the plateau. It’s still a home but keeping the place standing as well as fighting toxic mold requires deeper pockets than the owner ever imagined. Read more

School tax change bears consideration

February 23, 2010

A proposal in the state Senate that would shift property taxes from local districts to the state in order to fund education has the seed of good public policy, but must be explored further.
The bill (SB 6858), co-sponsored by Sen. Cheryl Pflug, generally proposes that local school districts have their levy lid decreased, meaning less local school taxes. In exchange, the state would increase its property tax rate by a corresponding amount. Read more

Government must be accountable

February 23, 2010

By Toby Nixon

I firmly disagree with Tim Larson’s remarks regarding holding City Council retreats at far-away locations.
Why do Sammamish City Council members and staff feel that they can’t speak frankly in front of the citizens who placed them in their positions, and for whom they work? Why is it necessary to leave the city and give reporters and the public “an excuse not to attend,” in order for them to be open and honest about how they really feel about city issues? Is Larson saying that when the council is meeting in their chambers that they and the city staff are giving the citizens of Sammamish less than the full truth, keeping some things hidden, and being “guarded?”
No City Council should ever be ashamed or hesitant in any way to have a full and frank discussion of the people’s business right at home where the public can observe. Read more

Finance Chief Dave Gray has given himself a deadline for reforming Eastside Fire & Rescue’s budget process: 2011.
At the Feb. 11 meeting, Gray said EFR’s Board of Directors would get a chance to review how his staff constructs the budget, with a new process in place sometime in 2011. The process would impact the 2012 budget. Read more

Sammamish balks at cost of EFR repair projects

February 23, 2010

A new dispute between Sammamish and its fire protection provider is boiling to the surface. This time it’s about an old kitchen and a leaky roof.
Even on a sunny day Feb. 18, water dripped through the mossy tile roof of Station 82, located at 1851 228th Avenue S.E. The firefighters have placed a bucket under the area where water leaks. Otherwise, it would seep down into the sleeping quarters of the firefighters. The roof at Station 82 is covered in moss. Photo by J.B. Wigan
