Lake Washington Schools want input on new math curriculum

The Lake Washington School District wants parents’ input as it considers which elementary level math curriculum to adopt. At its Jan. 7 board meeting, the district narrowed its choices down to four programs, according to a district press release.
And although the first two review and input sessions have passed, one more is open to the community at 7 p.m. Jan. 26 at Frost Elementary School in Kirkland. Read more
Klahanie residents push county to consider park proposal

Klahanie residents asked King County officials to slow the proposed Klahanie Park transfer to Sammamish until the homeowners association can assemble a proposal to take on the park.
But the cash-strapped county hopes to complete a transfer before money runs out — possibly within the next few months — to keep the 64-acre park open. Read more
Issaquah’s transportation levy would buy school buses

One of the three levies on the Feb. 9 ballot is a request from the Issaquah School District to replace school buses.
The one-year $1.7 million transportation levy would be used to purchase 41 school buses by 2014. If approved, property owners would pay 9 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation. The last transportation levy, passed in 2006, provided the district with $2.8 million to purchase 36 large and 12 small buses. Read more

Lake Washington schools are asking voters for a bit of money this year. The district will place two levies and one bond on the ballot.
The smaller of the two levies is the capital projects levy, which would replace an expiring levy. Read more
Nutty sandwich could lead girl to cooking fame

Ten-year-old Sammamish resident Hannah Hall gets her cooking inspiration from watching the Food Network — particularly, Iron Chef America.
Her knack for food led Hannah, with help from her twin sister, Sarah Hall, to concoct a sweet, peanut-buttery, tangy panini-type sandwich that caught the attention of judges at Jif and was placed in the top-10 of new peanut butter sandwich creations. And it just might be named the best in America, if enough people vote for it in the Jif Most Creative Peanut Butter Sandwich Contest.

World Religion Day strives to bring faiths together

The atmosphere in City Hall Jan. 17 was happy, jovial and focused on bringing people together. Children drew peace signs, Stars of David and hearts, and people enjoyed fellowship and refreshments.
It could have been taken for a church service of sorts, but about 60 Sammamish residents gathered to celebrate the annual World Religion Day.

Kaete Kyncl

Kaete Kyncl, of Sammamish, died at home Jan. 8, 2010. She was 89.
At her request, no services will be held.
Kaete was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Hamburg, Germany. She moved to New York in 1928. She moved to Sammamish in 1959.
She enjoyed music, writing and cooking.
She is survived by her son Christopher Gardner, of Sammamish.
Arrangements are by Flintoft’s Funeral Home and Crematory.
Science fairs go high-tech

Necessity is the mother of all invention. Those words couldn’t ring truer as Rajeev Goel, a parent and volunteer, took on the task of coordinating the Cascade Ridge Elementary School science fair last year.
Faced with mountains of paperwork — the result of hundreds of student entries, project synopses and classroom data — Goel said he quickly realized that while students may be presenting futuristic science projects, the science fair, and its coordination, was an archaic system. Read more
Eastlake’s RAKE club looks for ways to help others

The first time the students in the Eastlake High School Random Acts of Kindness, Etcetera club got together in the fall to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for homeless teens, they made 147 in about an hour, said club president Laura Sotelo.
At the next meeting, last December, they had a few more people and used a better technique. They were able to make 244 sandwiches in 35 minutes, she said. Read more

The two advisers of the Beaver Lake Environmental Education Preservation Organization (known as BLEEPO), Ms. Rice and Ms. Velozo, both teachers at Beaver Lake, explained everything that I needed to know.
