The Eastlake Wolves boys basketball team posted its highest points total of the season Jan. 22 when they blew Newport out of the water 90-73.
The most they had scored in a game prior to the KingCo 4A league contest in Factoria was 78 — in the first game of the season.
“They shot the lights out of it,” said Newport head coach Dave Olzendam after the game. “We scored a lot of points. We just couldn’t stop them.”

EFR is an interlocal fire protection agency that serves a 190-square-mile area, encompassing Sammamish, Issaquah, North Bend, Carnation, May Valley, Tiger Mountain, Wilderness Rim and Preston. Read more

East Lake Sammamish Parkway reared its polemical head again Jan. 19, this time in the form of a management contract.
The city’s Public Works Department came before the council Jan. 19 with a request to approve a $466,689 contract with AECOM, a consultant who would supervise the construction. Read more

It took more than an hour for the City Council to make its commission picks Jan. 19. The council settled into a back room, discussing candidates for the Planning and Arts commissions in executive session. Narrowing down the field of 25 candidates for 11 positions proved trying for some of the council.
“Quite frankly, everybody has wonderful qualifications, which makes difficult decision making,” Mayor Don Gerend said. Read more

King County Library System officials will ask voters next month to increase property taxes to maintain programs and services at the third-busiest library system in the nation.
Officials trimmed $1.9 million from the system last year, cutting dollars for new books and other materials, technology upgrades and building maintenance. Proponents said additional money raised through the property tax increase is necessary to prevent further cuts. Opponents said the library system should not increase the tax burden on homeowners in a recession. Read more
Washington legislators face a nearly overwhelming task of balancing the state’s budget. Currently it’s $2.6 billion short. The budget gap is proportionally close in size to the shortfall that forced California to issue IOUs.
It is time legislators show that they are men and women of substance, capable of leading the state through its fiscal crisis by finding creative solutions.

Support the libraries
The people of Sammamish are very excited and pleased with our new library that opened Jan. 9. This beautiful, “green” building was paid for with King County Library System capital funds.
Now we need to pass Proposition 1 to keep it and the other 43 libraries in the system operating up to capacity.
Proposition 1 will restore the property tax levy to 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed value for collection in 2011, one year only.

Who knew a fire hydrant could cost so much money? A state Supreme Court decision in October 2008 threatens to incur $300,000 of added annual expenses for the city of Sammamish. Now government officials are scrambling to find a way to avoid assuming a loss in covering the capital costs, operations and maintenance of fire hydrants.
The past few months have been busy for Gayle Frink-Shulz, far too busy.
Frink-Shulz, who lives near Beaver Lake Park, is the program director for the Behind the Badge Foundation, a nonprofit that comes to the rescue when officers die or suffer catastrophic injury.
