If you’ve ever seen news footage of soldiers handing out candy to children in a war zone, you might wonder where the candy comes from.
Well, the military may provide some of the goodies they take into the field, but some Sammamish students are also contributing to the supply of sweets for servicemen and women around the world.
After one week of collection in early November, Elizabeth Blackwell students sent out approximately 320 pounds — 28 shipping boxes full — of candy to soldiers in various countries, including Iraq and Afghanistan, according to PTA volunteers Stacy Wells and Anne Murawski.
“They remember that there are people out there serving our country and dedicating their lives,” Wells said.
For eight years, students at Blackwell have been collecting and shipping candy to soldiers stationed abroad, Wells said.
The USS O’Kane, based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, is a regular recipient.
Candy sometimes goes to random bases or Navy ships abroad, she said, but this year Blackwell sent some to second-grader Emma Sessions’ uncle, Heber Rasmussen, who is stationed in Iraq.
“It’s great that the soldiers know that we’re thinking about them too,” Wells said.
She said the students were able to collect so much because they had a lot of leftovers from Halloween.
The boxes cost about $250 to send — PTA funds and donations covered it — but the postal service offers a slight discount because they’re for the military, Wells said.
Wells said the project is easy to do and hopes to get more schools to take part.
