Sammamish residents planning to head west to Seattle or Bellevue on state Route 520 this month had better plan their trips carefully.
The Washington Department of Transportation and the city of Redmond are each working on a road project (a third project has already been completed), which will lead to 20 road closures over the course of the month. Most will happen at night.
The city of Redmond plans to build a freeway overpass at Northeast 36th Street. As a result, 520 will be closed in one direction or the other from Dec. 4 through Dec. 22. The closures will stretch from 148th Avenue Northeast to Northeast 51st Street from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Crews will install 56 bridge girders for the new overpass, which is hoped to ease congestion in the Overlake area.
Crews also plan for a full closure of 520 at I-405 and three closures on westbound 520 between I-405 and 130th Avenue Northeast from Dec. 6-10.
The state is also continuing its project to widen 520 between West Lake Sammamish Parkway (in Bellevue) and state Route 202 in Redmond. This will result in numerous single-lane and ramp closures from 10 p.m.-5 a.m. through Dec. 23.
