First look at election results

November 3, 2009

By Ari Cetron

The first round of election results are in. Although ballots will be counted for days to come, some races are close while others seem to be decided. In Sammamish, about 22 percent of the votes have been counted. Further vote counts will be posted at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 4 and continuing daily until all ballots are counted.

In the Sammamish City Council race, Incumbent Don Gerend looks to be set to cruise to victory. He is ahead by a 68-32 margin.

In the other races, while they all have wide margins, the small number of votes counted mean they are too close to call at present.

Incumbent Jack Barry is, so far, losing in his re-election bid to Tom Odell. Odell is ahead 58-42

Real Estate agent John James is leading Planning Commissioner Erica Tiliacos by a 57-42 percent.

Former television journalist John Curley is ahead of Planning Commissioner Tom Vance 54-45.

At the county level, County Councilman Dow Constantine is ahead in the County Executive’s race, beating Susan Hutchinson 57-42.

All four of the county’s ballot measures look to have passed.

In the five-way race for assessor, Lloyd Hara has 33.5 percent of the vote, the next closest candidate, Bob Rosenberger, has 29.1 percent.

At the state level, results will continue to filter in through the night. Most counties do not have King County’s all-mail ballot system, so the results from the rest of the state will appear, but King County’s vote will be underrepresented.

As of 9:10 p.m. R-71, which would affirm rights for gay and unmarried heterosexual partners is ahead 52-48. If the measure passes, the rights granted by the state will stand.

I-1033, Tim Eyman’s latest tax cap initiative, fought tooth-and-nail by governments and other groups around the state, is losing by a 56-44 margin.
