The Duthie Hill Mountain Bike Park isn’t officially open yet, but Project Manager Mike Westra said enthusiasts are welcome to check it out.

“It’s not officially open, but we’re just not kicking people out,” Westra said.

Westra said the first phase of the park would finish by the end of March 2010, with an official opening in April.

So far, the park has three miles of rideable cross-country trails, plus technical lines with jumps and about 550 feet of a boardwalk. Westra said the focus of the park was on cross-country trails for all skill levels. The park will have a four-leaf clover design.

The 120-acre park is located southeast of Sammamish city limits at 27101 SE Duthie Hill Road in Issaquah, north of Grand Ridge Park. Funding comes from two King County grants and from the Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance.

The overall cost for the first phase of construction is $203,500, Westra said. All of the funding comes from grants or community donations.

The park’s planning began in January 2008. Since then, the county and Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance held public meetings in the fall of 2008 and adjusted some elements of the overall design. Any feature that would require substantial permitting has been pushed out to a later phase of construction, Westra said.

The Evergreen Mountain Alliance is still seeking volunteers to help cut trails, shovel dirt and prune branches. Go to http://evergreenmtb.org/home/index.php to contact the alliance about volunteering or to learn more about the park’s design.
