Residents can now read a completed draft of the City Council’s Shoreline Master Plan, a document that lays out policy direction and regulations for building along lake shorelines in Sammamish.

It is available at City Hall and online. Go to http://www.ci.sammamish.wa.us/SMP.aspx and click on the link that reads “City Council Public Review Draft of the Shoreline Master Program Update.”

The council is scheduled to discuss and vote on the plan Sept. 15. The council must approve some form of a Shoreline Master Plan update – with more stringent restrictions – by the end of 2009 to comply with a state Department of Ecology mandate

The Planning Commission drafted a recommended plan in November 2008, with help from the Department of Community Development and a consultant. But the plan drew criticism from residents who said it would infringe upon their property rights, inhibit their ability to enjoy the lake and lower the resale value of their homes.

Since then the council has invited intense public input through round table discussions, Wednesday afternoon meetings at City Hall and the usual three-minute testimony from shoreline residents at public meetings. Residents collaborated on a draft of their own, which they turned in May 19 as an alternative to the commission’s recommendations.
