Few watch Sammamish City Council meetings

A new survey concluded that only a small percentage of cable subscribers in Sammamish watch the city’s television station.

Hebert Research, a Bellevue-based consultant hired by the city, contacted 361 random residents in April and found 51 people — about 14 percent — said they watched more than five minutes of a City Council meeting in the last month.

Those findings are an increase from an April 2008 community survey that found 10.2 percent of 393 residents had seen a City Council meeting for more than five minutes in the last month.

Council meetings air on Sammamish TV at 1 a.m., 7 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day. For Comcast subscribers, the channel is 21 and for Broadstripe subscribers the channel is 61.

The channel also shows local parks concerts, City Council study sessions and messages from Public Health – Seattle & King County.

The city commissioned the TV survey as part of franchise agreement negotiations with Comcast and Broadstripe.

The survey’s findings are available online at http://www.ci.sammamish.wa.us/files/document/5587.pdf.

The survey found that 62.7 percent of respondents were Comcast subscribers, while 5.1 percent were Broadstripe subscribers. Most of the respondents were 36 or older and a majority of cable subscribers were women.

About 32.2 percent of respondents do not subscribe to cable, which does not mean they do not have television — they could have satellite or broadcast television.

Comcast consistently scored better than Broadstripe on customer satisfaction ratings, including picture and sound quality, variety of programming and overall cost of cable services.
