Parent seminar focuses on body image in middle and high school students
May 19, 2009
Parents can learn more about the signs, symptoms and dangers of eating disorders at a special seminar May 21 at Beaver Lake Middle School.
The goal of the seminar is to reduce stigma associated with body image and to recognize the pressures, attitudes and behaviors that shape eating disorders.
“I think it is important for parents to be aware that it can happen in middle school and beyond, also, to understand the underlying problems and issues associated with these disorders and what influences these children to become concerned about their body image and eating habits in the first place,” said Alison Cathro, a PTSA member at Beaver Lake who helped organize the seminar. 5 Sammamish area girls head to state golf tourney
May 19, 2009
Skyline senior Chelsea Guenette will remember her day-two, ninth-hole putt for birdie “for a long time.”
After completing a soggy first day of KingCo tournament play May 12 at Snohomish Golf Course with a competitive 94, the ground dried out for Guenette, and she sank the 25-foot putt to finish the front nine in 44 shots. She finished with a score of 181, which was enough to advance to the state tournament in Pasco May 27 and 28.
“I am so excited. It’s been my goal since freshman year to go to state,” Guenette said in a phone interview after the match. Read more

Levy package presented to Issaquah School Board
May 19, 2009
The Issaquah School District’s proposed 2010 levy package would supplement the district’s strapped budget with more than $193 million by 2014 if the school board members and voters approve it.
Superintendent Steve Rasmussen and administrative officials presented school board members with the proposed levy package May 13.
A vote will come after board members have had time to study the proposal, take community input and discuss them. Read more
Relay For Life raises $80,000 for cancer society
May 19, 2009
The members of the Electric Limes certainly stood out as they circled the Eastlake High School track on the warm afternoon of May 16. Senior Alex Chmaj donned a bright green cape, wacky sunglasses and carried a giant flag with the team’s name painted for all to see. Jeff White shaded his face and head from the burning sun with an immense, flimsy, green cowboy hat, and Brandon Eller taped green balloons to his ears to grab some attention for himself.

Brain cancer walk to benefit Swedish
May 19, 2009
Brain cancer may be one of the deadliest cancers, but that fact only makes Sammamish resident Dellann Elliott more determined to fight the disease. In 2002, Elliott started the Chris Elliott Fund for Glioblastoma Brain Cancer Research in honor of her husband and participated in the Swedish Medical Center’s Seattle Brain Cancer Walk when it started in 2008.
Sammamish resident Tamara DePorter, who is running for Mrs. Washington on a brain cancer awareness platform, is part of the Chris Elliott Fund team. A good friend of hers passed away from glioblastoma within six months of receiving his diagnosis. She encouraged others to join the team and contribute to the cause. Read more
Tons of school supplies headed for South Africa
May 19, 2009
It looked like moving day in the parking lot at Beaver Lake Middle School May 14.
Bicycles littered the pavement and a conveyer belt of students and adults transferred 400 boxes of computers, school supplies and other goods from one shipping container to another.

It’s all about water at annual festival on Beaver Lake
May 19, 2009
The rain subsided just in time for the Endeavour and Sunny Hills fourth-graders to break for lunch May 14 at Beaver Lake Park.
Although the misty blanket of precipitation went with the theme of the day’s events, participants welcomed its cessation. They were there to learn about water’s role in the environment, not to get soaked in the process.

Sammamish City Council to begin discussing shoreline options
May 18, 2009
New May 18, 3:14 p.m.
The City Council seems poised to make changes to a proposal for new regulations on shoreline property owners.
People who live along Sammamish lakes are none too happy with proposed revisions to the city’s Shoreline Master Program. In about three hours of public testimony during the council’s May 12 work session, the plan was blasted time and again by residents who own property along lakes. Read more
