New May 30, 2:41 p.m.
The tale of the Washington Class 4A state boys golf championship May 27-28 was an unlikely comeback story for Eastlake senior Kevin Penner.
By no means was he a long-shot underdog — he won state as a sophomore and placed third in 2008 — but the fashion in which he lost the lead, battled back and ultimately won a three-way playoff on the second-round 18th is one he and his coaches won’t forget for years to come. Read more

2 citizen groups defend the Freed House
May 26, 2009
Helen Baxter didn’t understand why the City Council was balking at the idea of preserving the Freed House.
“Everyone’s at a loss. How does this happen?” said Baxter, co-president of the Sammamish Heritage Society.
Baxter reminded the council that the Freed House was built in 1895 with brick and old growth timber and precedes the city’s existence by more than 100 years. If the house were allowed to fall into greater disrepair, “a major visible link to the past is diminished,” she said.

The Freed House is perched on rusty rails and blocks beside 212th Avenue. The City Council is ambivalent about what to do with the 114-year-old building. File Photo
