Eastside Catholic students open eyes to career ideas

April 28, 2009

Hundreds of students buzzed through the halls of Eastside Catholic High School between sessions making sure they got their passports stamped and contemplating their future.

They weren’t traveling anywhere, but they were learning about the possibilities that await them in the real world of law, finance, aviation, media and medicine, among others.

“We’re getting them to really think about their passion and take it to the next level,” said Patti Finley, Eastside Catholic director of marketing and communications. Read more

Streaking Eastlake tennis downs Skyline

April 28, 2009

It came down to the battle of the Kristins April 23 at Eastlake High School. The three-set No. 3 singles match between Skyline’s Kristin Klein and Eastlake’s Kristin Dorr lasted more than two and a half hours and was the deciding match in what would be a 7-2 Eastlake victory.

After Eastlake went up 4-2 in the meet, the two girls battled through a second-set tiebreaker, which Klein won 7-6 (7-5). But Dorr eventually fought back in the third to win 6-1 and tip the scales for an Eastlake win.

Eastlake golfers out-stroke Liberty at Sahalee North

April 28, 2009

Eastlake sophomore Dana Mydland called April 21 her “worst” performance at Sahalee this season, but it was good enough to win the match against Liberty High School.

The team’s No. 1 golfer shot a season-best 45 on the par-36 Sahalee North 9, to help the Lady Wolves to a 247-297 win over the Patriots on a hot Tuesday afternoon. Eastlake improved to 5-0 on the season.

Sammamish student has candy-coated senior prom night

April 27, 2009

Last year, Emily Chen did the traditional dress thing for her junior prom. This time around, she wanted something a bit more unusual. So she sewed a few hundred Skittles wrappers to a piece of red cotton and, ta-da, prom dress.

Chen, of Sammamish, made the dress for her culminating project at the International Community School, a choice school in the Lake Washington School District.

Issaquah schools could lay off 158 teachers

April 23, 2009

New — 11:01 a.m. April 23, 2009

Issaquah School Board members voted unanimously to lay off 158 of its 1,097 teachers Wednesday night, after district officials presented their reduction in force plan.

Teachers can expect to receive layoff notices by May 1.

Their contract stipulates that layoffs are based on seniority. Teachers who fall from No.1 to No. 902 on the seniority list are guaranteed positions next year. Teachers who are at or below No. 903 will receive layoff notices.

The positions of up to 195 — 17.8 percent — of the district’s teachers are likely to be eliminated. Thirty-seven teachers have already resigned or weren’t provided continuing contracts for next year. Read more

Sammamish City Hall replaces green driveway with standard asphalt

April 22, 2009

New: April 22 3:15 p.m.

An incorrectly built green building technique used at City Hall has proven more trouble than it’s worth, according to Pete Butkus, deputy city manager.
Butkus recommended to the City Council April 14 that the council approve a $16,057 construction contract with Sutter Paving to remove a portion of driveway beside City Hall and replace it with concrete curbs and standard asphalt.
The City Council voted 6-0 in favor of the driveway replacement.
The city’s 2009-2010 budget had set aside $75,000 for a City Hall parking lot repair project, including the driveway portion.
The city built the driveway using grasscrete, a mixed-use surface that combines bumps of concrete with pockets of grass and soil.
The concrete pockets were designed to have holes at the bottom to drain water. They did not have the holes and could not drain, Butkus said in a later interview. As a result, the water pools on the surface.
“When it rains, it turns to mud,” Butkus said, adding that the mud trickles into the storm drainage system.
Bayley Construction poured the concrete in 2006, and under Washington construction law, the company is not responsible for fixing the problem, Butkus said.
Butkus also pointed out that Bayley Construction poured grasscrete at another location on the City Hall site, which does function properly.
With the council’s approval, construction on the driveway would begin in about a month, Butkus said.

Sammamish budget augers trouble

April 21, 2009

The city is making less money than expected in 2009, and a lack of private construction appears to be the cause, according to Finance Director Lyman Howard.

Howard gave his first quarterly report of 2009 to the City Council, saying early signs indicate the city will receive less revenue than anticipated.

The city had budgeted to receive $2.6 million from the real estate excise tax. Projections based on January-March show the city receiving 37 percent less than expected, or about $962,000 less. In fact, the city is on pace to make less in sales taxes, building permit revenues, building plan check fees, interest income revenues and impact fees. Read more
