Sammamish library to help job seekers

Librarian Robbin Gaebler has seen a definite mood shift at the Sammamish Public Library. People come in tense, their spouses recently laid off, their job searches aren’t going well — small late fees might be enough to make someone snap.
“We’re not social workers, yet someone is there showing us their entire resume,” Gaebler said. “We’re being drawn into people’s personal lives right now.”
It’s in this climate that Gaebler and other librarians in the King County Library System are hosting “Look to Your Library … Especially Now,” a set of programs for dealing with the recession May 1-8.
For seven days, the Sammamish Public Library will open one hour early to host guest speakers and a resume-writing workshop. Some of the speakers will include a finance expert, a job-search instructor and a career consultant.
While most of the events take place at 9 a.m., there are a few scheduled for the afternoon or evening. Call 836-8793 for more information, or go to the library’s home page at www.kcls.org/sammamish/index.cfm.

Even on days when the programs aren’t taking place, residents should take advantage of the library’s resources, from self-help books to free computer access to free printing paper, Gaebler said.
“It’s great that the library is a place that can provide solutions,” she said.
