Sammamish student has candy-coated senior prom night

Last year, Emily Chen did the traditional dress thing for her junior prom. This time around, she wanted something a bit more unusual. So she sewed a few hundred Skittles wrappers to a piece of red cotton and, ta-da, prom dress.
Chen, of Sammamish, made the dress for her culminating project at the International Community School, a choice school in the Lake Washington School District.

“First, I had to learn how to sew,” Chen said.
She bought some red cotton, because candy wrappers are notoriously uncomfortable as clothing, and created the basic sheathe for her dress. Then it was just a matter of attaching what Chen estimated to be 200 Skittles wrappers to the cotton. The whole process took about 40 hours, she said.
She was able to solicit donations of wrappers from other students at the school, as well as within her family.
“My brother helped me a lot by eating a lot,” Chen said.
Her boyfriend was at college and unable to attend the prom, so there was no need to find a coordinating bow tie and cummerbund.
Chen said she plans to keep the dress, and may wear it again, if the occasion arises.
