Television personality John Curley has announced his candidacy for Sammamish City Council.
Curley, 47, said politics runs in the family. He remembers when his grandfather was a commissioner in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. and earned a reputation in town for his thriftiness.
That has translated into Curley’s own general political philosophy, that raising taxes should be a last resort.
“My big thing, the government should be on bended knee and bowed head if it asks for more money from people,” he said.
Curley, the 14-year host of “Evening Magazine” on King 5 Television, shot the last episode of the show on April 22. He moved to Seattle in 1995, settling into the Queen Anne neighborhood. In 2005, he and his wife Lacey moved to Sammamish.
“We wanted a community. We wanted schools. We wanted granite counter tops, a new kitchen and a bonus room,” Curley said.
Today, the Curleys live off East Lake Sammamish Parkway Southeast. Their daughter Charlie, 7, and son Ry, 6, both attend St. Joseph’s School, a Catholic school in Issaquah.
Curley is still developing an election platform, although he said he is generally interested in how the city’s growth competes with environmental health.
“Sammamish is at a real crossroads of incredible development,” he said.
Curley said he intended to go door knocking in May to gather thoughts on what other people want to see happen in City Hall.
He has not attended City Council meetings because of work conflicts, but he said he has watched the meetings on television.
“I wouldn’t say I TiVO them, but I do tune in to see what sweater (City Councilman) Jack Barry is wearing,” he said, adding that he hopes to sit down and speak with current City Council members about city issues.
Curley also said he has hired a campaign manager. He had not decided for which seat he would run, but he was eyeing the one that will be left open after Lee Fellinge’s departure from the council.
All candidates running for City Council must file with King County Elections between June 1-5. No candidates have yet filed with the state’s Public Disclosure Commission.
