Skyline sophomore sprinter and jumper Kasen Williams didn’t have his best day April 2, but he still won two events at the dual meet against Mount Si High School.
Williams, known for his leaping ability in the high jump and triple jump events, won the 200-meter sprint in 24.1 seconds after a sloppy start out of the blocks.
“If he’s in position to win at the end of the race, he’s generally going to find a way to do it,” said Skyline boys coach Nick Lombardo. With a handful of its strongest members being out due to illness, injury and early spring break departure, the Skyline track team lost its second dual meet of the season 83-62 (boys) and 75-70 (girls).
Before the 200, Williams had just finished the triple jump, which he won with a distance of 39-11, and had to sprint across the field to get set for the race.
Even with no time to practice starts, Williams managed to eat up space around the curve and beat Mount Si’s Kaleb Huerta by .24 seconds.
“It felt good that I passed him at the last second,” Williams said after the race. “I didn’t think I was going to get him, but 24.1, it’s not my best time, but it’s raining out, it’s cold.”
It was a close margin for the girls, who have not lost a meet in recent memory, according to girls coach Dawn Geiser, but a win isn’t as important as maintaining individual results.
She said the team was not as worried about losing this early in the season, but hopes to have some of its strongest girls back and healthy after the break this week.
“We weren’t going into this … looking to have to win. This was just another opportunity for the girls to get out there,” Geiser said. “I was not surprised at all by the outcome of the meet.”
The Skyline girls did, however, sweep first place in the relays April 2.
The 4×100 relay finished in 50.6 seconds, the 4×200 relay team came in at 1:46.6 and the 4×400 team finished in 4:21.8.
Senior Kiara Williams won the triple jump with a leap of 33-3 1/2 and Haley Ziegler won the girls javelin with a throw of 99-10.
Upon returning from spring break, Geiser said the girls will set their sights on the upcoming invites at Bellevue and Lake Washington, which will prepare them for the KingCo meet May 13.
Although the boys lost to Mount Si, the Spartans won eight events, including Kasen Williams’ two victories.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Taylor Mitchell placed first with a time of 16.5 seconds.
The boys also swept their two relay events. Skyline won the 4×100 in 46.3 seconds, and the 4×400 in 3:42.8. The 4×100 team was Skyline’s B team and had run together only once before.
“They came out and they just hit their handoffs beautifully,” Lombardo said.
